Jason Momoa & Dave Bautista’s Overlooked Sci-Fi Series Is Making a Massive Comeback on Apple TV+
A sci-fi series starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista is getting new attention on Apple TV+. The show, called See, was one of the very first original series released by Apple TV+. It premiered alongside other early Apple shows like The Morning Show, For All Mankind, and Dickinson.
Despite the big launch, See didn’t become as popular as Apple probably hoped. After three seasons, it ended in 2022 and was mostly forgotten.
But recently, See has been climbing back up in Apple TV+’s streaming charts. According to CBR, the show is currently in the top ten worldwide on Apple TV+, even reaching number seven on June 12. Other popular shows like Ted Lasso, Severance, and Your Friends and Neighbors are also on the list. Interestingly, See is the oldest show on the list, having premiered a year before Ted Lasso.
The show’s return to popularity raises questions about why it didn’t do well when it first came out. When See first aired, it got mixed reviews. Season 1 holds a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics pointed out that the show had too much gore and a confusing story, which overshadowed the strong performances by the cast. This might have turned viewers away early on.
However, things changed with Season 2, which received much better reviews. It earned an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The third season, though not rated yet, seems to have kept up the positive trend based on reviews. The show’s initial struggles might have been because Apple TV+ was new, and people were unsure about investing their time in a new series from a new streaming service.
Now, it looks like viewers have learned that See improves a lot after the first season and are giving it another chance.
See is a science fiction drama on Apple TV+ starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard. The show is set in the distant future, after a virus wiped out most of humanity.
The survivors and their descendants have lost the ability to see, and in this new world, sight is thought to be just a myth.
The story follows a mountain tribe where a woman named Maghra gives birth to twins who can see, something very rare and dangerous. Baba Voss, the tribe’s leader, marries Maghra and raises the children as his own. The twins’ real father, Jerlamarel, is hunted by the ruler of a nearby kingdom because having the ability to see is seen as a crime and a threat.
The world of See is divided between two rival groups: the Payan Kingdom and the Trivantian Republic. People live in a simple, tribal way, using old tools and ideas, since the knowledge of the past world with sight and technology has been lost or turned into legends.
The show explores how Baba Voss fights to keep his family safe from enemies who want to capture the sighted children. It mixes action, survival, and the idea of what happens when something as natural as sight becomes forbidden and feared.
The main characters of See include Jason Momoa as Baba Voss. Sylvia Hoeks plays Queen Sibeth Kane, the strict ruler who punishes anyone who talks about sight.
Hera Hilmar is Maghra, Christian Camargo plays Tamacti Jun, a tough soldier hunting for people with sight. Archie Madekwe and Nesta Cooper play the twins, Kofun and Haniwa, who have the rare ability to see. Kofun is careful and smart, while Haniwa is strong and curious.
The rest of the cast includes Yadira Guevara-Prip, Alfre Woodard, Eden Epstein, Olivia Cheng, Hoon Lee, Tom Mison, Dave Bautista, David Hewlett and Michael Raymond-James.
