After the latest Indiana Jones movie didn’t do well at the box office, Lucasfilm seems ready to start fresh with the whole franchise. According to DisInsider, the studio plans to reboot Indiana Jones, but they’re waiting a bit before making anything official.

The big reveal could come at the D23 Expo in 2026. Even though the last film didn’t perform as hoped, Disney and Lucasfilm still see value in the iconic character and don’t want the series to disappear.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny came out in 2023 and was meant to be the final adventure for Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones. The story takes place in 1969, with Indy now teaching at Hunter College in New York City. He’s dealing with a lot, his son Mutt died in the Vietnam War, and his marriage to Marion fell apart.

Then his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, shows up looking for a mysterious relic called Archimedes’ Dial. This leads Indy on a journey through Morocco, Greece, and Italy.

During the trip, they face off against a former Nazi scientist turned NASA man named Jürgen Voller, played by Mads Mikkelsen. Voller wants to use the Dial to travel back in time and change history by killing Hitler before World War II starts. The movie ends with Indy traveling back to 212 BC, during the Siege of Syracuse, before returning to the present and making peace with Marion.

Despite the exciting adventure and emotional moments, the movie didn’t catch on with many viewers. It cost almost $300 million to make, and although it got some tax breaks, it still lost money. The worldwide box office total was about $384 million, but experts like Forbes said it needed at least $477 million to break even, maybe even $600 million according to Collider.

James Mangold, the director, talked to Deadline about the film’s poor reception and said it hurt him. “You have a wonderful, brilliant actor who’s in his eighties. So I’m making a movie about this guy in his eighties, but his audience on one other level doesn’t want to confront their hero at that age… It hurt… I really love Harrison and I wanted audiences to love him as he was.”

Harrison Ford told The Wall Street Journal he accepts what happened, saying bluntly, “Shit happens.” He also said he wanted to tell one last story with Indiana Jones and is glad he did it.

Karen Allen, who played Marion again, said she wished she had a bigger role but was thankful to be part of the movie. John Rhys-Davies, who played Sallah, liked the film but felt it missed a chance to bring the story full circle by not using characters from earlier movies more.

Before the film came out, there was already talk about the franchise’s future. Back in 2016, Disney CEO Bob Iger said they weren’t sure what would happen after the fifth film but made it clear it wouldn’t be the last Indiana Jones movie.

In 2022, Kathleen Kennedy confirmed Harrison Ford wouldn’t be replaced. Around that time, Disney was considering new films or a Disney+ show, but by 2023, Lucasfilm reportedly put those ideas on hold to focus on Star Wars.

Now, things might be shifting again. DisInsider reports that a full reboot of the franchise is in the works, even though nothing has been officially announced yet. This means Indiana Jones could come back with a new actor, a different story, and a fresh start.

So, while Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was the end of Harrison Ford’s chapter, it might not be the end of the adventure for the franchise.
