Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas Take the Plunge in Doug Liman’s ‘Deeper’ with Major Filming News

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are teaming up again for a new movie called Deeper. The film is set to start shooting this August, and Ana de Armas will star alongside Cruise. Warner Bros. is behind the project, which reportedly has a huge budget of around $200 million, according to Deadline.

Deeper has been in development for years. The original script, written by Max Landis, first caught attention back in 2016. Since then, the project has seen many big names attached, including actors like Bradley Cooper, Idris Elba, and Gal Gadot. Directors Kornél Mundruczó and Baltasar Kormákur were also linked to the film at different points, but the movie never got made, until now.

The story follows a disgraced astronaut, played by Cruise, who goes on a deep-sea mission to explore a newly discovered ocean trench. Once he dives into the depths, he faces a mysterious and dangerous force. Doug Liman has described the movie as a supernatural thriller. Speaking to Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman, Liman said, “I have never done one [a scary movie], and neither has Tom.”

Cruise and de Armas have already started training for the underwater scenes. This film is expected to be Cruise’s next big project and might even come out before his upcoming Alejandro González Iñárritu film, which is set for October 2026.

The screenplay was recently finalized by Christopher McQuarrie, who has worked with Cruise many times before. Sources say the script is now ready for filming.

Initially, MGM bought the script for a large sum, but the studio dropped the project after allegations were made against Max Landis. The script was then revised and moved over to Warner Bros., where Liman took over as director and Cruise signed on as star.

This marks the third time Cruise and Liman have worked together, after Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. The two are also developing another ambitious film with NASA and SpaceX that involves shooting in space, though that project is still in early stages.

Doug Liman is coming off recent successes with his Road House remake and the Apple TV+ heist movie The Instigators, both of which are getting sequels. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise just wrapped up Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and is reportedly in talks for a sequel to his 1990 racing film Days of Thunder.

If everything goes as planned, Deeper will start filming this summer. With a star-studded cast, a high budget, and an exciting story, it’s already one of the most anticipated movies coming soon.
