‘The Bear’ and ‘The White Lotus’ Lead 2025 Emmys Race as Netflix and Apple Dominate
The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards are finally out, and it’s shaping up to be one of the toughest races in recent years. According to DiscussingFilm, shows like The Bear, Severance, The White Lotus, and The Pitt are grabbing the most attention after scoring multiple nominations across major categories. This year’s Emmys will happen on September 14, 2025, live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. You can catch it on CBS and Paramount+.
In the drama world, it’s a huge year for HBO’s The White Lotus, which picked up nominations in almost every acting category. Big names like Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Sam Rockwell are all in the supporting actor race thanks to the show. Even supporting actresses like Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, and Natasha Rothwell are on the list. With Mike White once again nominated for directing and writing, The White Lotus could easily win big.
Apple TV+ also has plenty to celebrate. Severance is back in the spotlight with nominations for Adam Scott, Britt Lower, and nearly the entire supporting cast. Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, and Tramell Tillman are all nominated. Director Ben Stiller and creator Dan Erickson are also up for awards. Slow Horses, another Apple series, is competing too, thanks to Gary Oldman’s lead actor nomination and a directing nod.
Not far behind, Disney+’s Andor is back with Pedro Pascal leading its charge. Netflix isn’t staying quiet either, as The Diplomat and The Last of Us are competing in the drama category.
In comedy, The Bear is everywhere. It scored nominations for lead actor Jeremy Allen White, lead actress Ayo Edebiri, and most of its supporting cast like Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas. Guest actor Jon Bernthal also made the list. First-time director Ayo Edebiri even got nominated for directing an episode herself.
The Studio, from Apple TV+, is the big surprise this year. Seth Rogen, both as a lead actor and co-director, picked up nominations. The show also landed acting nominations for Kathryn Hahn, Catherine O’Hara, and Ron Howard, among others. DiscussingFilm points out that “The Studio looks ready to challenge favorites like Hacks and The Bear this year.”
Speaking of Hacks, Jean Smart returns in the lead actress category, trying to keep her winning streak going. Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary is still pulling in awards attention too, with nominations in both acting and writing.
Over in limited series, Netflix is the clear frontrunner. The Penguin, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and Black Mirror are all up for awards. Colin Farrell leads the pack for The Penguin, while Cate Blanchett and Rashida Jones are also nominated for their roles in Disclaimer and Black Mirror. Michelle Williams is in the race too for Dying for Sex, which turned out to be another surprise hit.
Netflix’s Adolescence also made a strong showing with nominations for Stephen Graham and multiple supporting actors. Director Philip Barantini and writers Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham are also up for awards.
Creative categories like writing and directing are split between The Bear, The Studio, Severance, and The White Lotus. DiscussingFilm says “this year feels unpredictable with so many heavy hitters competing across the same categories.”
For fans hoping their favorites would show up in the nominations, this year didn’t disappoint. The full list is being updated live, but what’s clear already is that shows from Netflix, HBO, Apple TV+, and Hulu are running the game.
The 2025 Emmys could become a massive night for Apple TV+ if The Studio and Severance both manage to win. The same goes for HBO, counting on The White Lotus and The Pitt to score wins. As DiscussingFilm summed it up, “no single show is dominating the race, and that’s what makes this year’s Emmys so exciting.”
Stay tuned until September 14 to find out who takes home the trophies.
