James Cameron is busy finishing up Avatar: Fire and Ash, but he’s already planning his next big film. This time, he’s turning away from the world of Pandora and focusing on a true story from history.

Cameron’s new project will be about Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a Japanese man who survived both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings during World War II. The movie will be based on the book Ghosts of Hiroshima, which is set to come out in August.

DiscussingFilm recently got an exclusive look at the second trailer for the book and shared some fresh details about Cameron’s passion for the story.

The book Ghosts of Hiroshima was written by Charles Pellegrino, a bestselling author who also worked as a science consultant on Titanic and Avatar.

This project has been a dream for Cameron for a long time, and he finally decided to focus on this particular story. The audiobook trailer, narrated by Martin Sheen and featuring music by Hans Zimmer, adds another layer of depth to the story.

When Cameron first announced the project, he shared why it’s so important to him. “It’s a subject that I’ve wanted to do a film about, that I’ve been wrestling with how to do it, over the years. I met Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just days before he died. He was in the hospital. He was handing the baton of his personal story to us, so I have to do it. I can’t turn away from it.”

Cameron and Pellegrino promised to keep Yamaguchi’s powerful story alive for future generations.

The book will be released on August 5, the same week marking the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

While there isn’t a clear start date for filming yet, Cameron’s busy schedule is the main reason for the delay. The book is published by Blackstone Publishing and The Story Factory, and you can pre-order it now.

Cameron has been clear about his goal for the movie. He wants it to be honest and unflinching, showing the real horror of what happened. In a bold comparison, he told reporters that his approach to this film will be similar to how Steven Spielberg handled Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List, two of the most powerful war films ever made.

This new project shows that even with huge success in science fiction, Cameron is deeply committed to telling meaningful real-life stories that need to be remembered. Fans will have to wait a bit longer to see how he brings this powerful tale to the big screen.
