James Gunn’s Superman is out in theaters, and it’s doing great both with critics and at the box office. The film kicks off the live-action side of the new DC Universe, and it’s packed with DC heroes like Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and even Lex Luthor. But one of the most talked-about surprises was a quick but memorable cameo from John Cena’s Peacemaker.

In the movie, Peacemaker pops up as a guest on a talk show and takes some time to trash Superman on air. Recently, Cena spoke about how that cameo happened and why he didn’t hesitate for a second to do it. Speaking with the press while promoting the scene, Cena said it all came down to one thing: James Gunn asked.

“I got to go on a talk show and talk smack about Superman. I was called in at the final hour as we were getting ready for Peacemaker Season 2… James asked if I wanted in and I said, ‘heck yes,’” Cena explained.

He made it clear that when Gunn calls, he shows up. “The cameo came about because he asked me, and he could ask me to go to the ends of the Earth and if I could do it, then I’ll do it. He’s one of the people on a short list, which I admire and respect and really do as much as I can for them. He’s changed my life completely, as I stand here in [the Peacemaker costume].”

For Cena, the Superman cameo was more than just a fun moment. It was also a chance to be part of what he sees as an exciting new era for the DCU. He’s thrilled by the way audiences are responding to Gunn’s take on Superman, and he thinks it’s a sign of good things ahead.

“I think to have audiences around the world embrace James’ vision of Superman, which is James’ vision for the DCU, is exciting for all of us,” Cena said. “It shows that people are interested and they know that Superman is more than just a standalone movie. It’s an installment in something larger and I think everyone is eager to see the next chapter.”

That next chapter will include Peacemaker Season 2, which Gunn is writing in full and directing the first episode of. The new season will still have the same wild, over-the-top humor fans loved, but it’s also going to tie more deeply into Gunn’s larger DC story. Several characters from Superman, like Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, will appear in Peacemaker alongside the core cast from Season 1.

The plot will follow Peacemaker as he discovers an alternate reality where life is exactly how he wants it. But instead of giving him a happy ending, it will force him to face old wounds and think about what kind of person he wants to be. The season will also bring in new faces like Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. and Michael Rooker as the mysterious Red St. Wild, connecting Peacemaker not just to Superman but also to Creature Commandos.

With Gunn’s vision clicking with audiences and the DCU finally starting to take shape, Cena says the excitement is real. And if his Superman cameo proved anything, it’s that Peacemaker still has plenty of chaos left to bring to the new DC Universe.
