The next Mortal Kombat movie, titled Mortal Kombat II, is coming soon and fans are already excited. This new film is directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater. It’s based on the popular video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.

This movie is a sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat film and will be the fourth movie in the Mortal Kombat series. Many of the actors from the first film are coming back, including Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, and others. New stars like Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle are also joining the cast.

After the first movie was released in April 2021, the team behind it—producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director Simon McQuoid, started talking about what’s next for the series.

They discussed making separate movies about characters like Johnny Cage and Bi-Han, along with a direct sequel. By 2022, Warner Bros. gave the green light for the sequel. Jeremy Slater was hired to write the script, and McQuoid came back to direct.

Filming started in June 2023 in Australia at Village Roadshow Studios, located in Gold Coast, Queensland. However, production was paused in July because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Once the strike ended, filming continued in November and wrapped up in late January 2024. Stephen F. Windon worked as the cinematographer during filming.

Recently, Collider shared an exclusive, up-close picture of Noob Saibot, one of the characters from the film. The image shows Noob Saibot with his empty eyes and a classic look that stays true to the video game. The design for Noob Saibot in the movie took a lot of inspiration from Mortal Kombat 1, especially the Khaos Reigns expansion. This version mixes shiny armor with the traditional Lin Kuei ninja outfit.

Simon McQuoid gave some insight into how the filmmakers created Noob Saibot’s shadowy look. He said, “To translate his distinctive ‘shadow wraith’ look onto film, we drew most of our inspiration from the recent version of the game. Cappi had the brilliant idea of creating unique materials and finishes that would reflect the light while always being true to Bi-Han’s singular idea of being a shadow. His body was made of low-gloss textured black rubber under-skin, while his armour was organic in style and featured a dark grey pearlescent reflective finish. The shadow clone within him is a different character, so we needed a different costume and color, but they shared materials, ensuring his unique look was clearly separated from his shadow clone while always being born from the same character.”

The film is set to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in theaters across the United States on October 24. Fans have plenty of time to get ready for the next round of action-packed fighting from their favorite Mortal Kombat characters.
