Orlando Bloom has undergone one of the most intense transformations of his career, losing 52 pounds in just three months for his new boxing drama The Cut. The film, directed by Sean Ellis, follows a retired boxer who comes back to fight for a championship title and is pushed through a brutal weight-cutting routine by his extreme coach, played by John Turturro.

Speaking to Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered on September 5, Bloom explained how he prepared for the role.

“I basically tiered down the food over a three-month period until just before filming, [when] I was at my lightest. I dropped 52 pounds, and I was about 185 when I started,” he said. “So I dropped quite a lot of weight, and I was very mentally challenged as well. You feed somebody tuna and cucumber long enough…”

Director Sean Ellis revealed they filmed the movie in reverse order to help Bloom handle the extreme diet. He said, “Your brain is starved of calories, basically. It was going to be impossible for him to work while dieting. So, he came to us at his lightest, and then he starts to eat. That meant we had to shoot the film with the ending first and the beginning last. Over the 25 days of shooting, he was putting on calories. And then it’s edited in reverse.”

Bloom admitted the mental side of the transformation was tougher than he expected. “I was more surprised about the mental aspect of it, like the sleep deprivation, and not the depleted calories. There’s a lot going on in your brain… living in that headspace for a while was very challenging.”

The movie focuses heavily on the dangerous and exhausting process of weight cutting, with one shocking scene showing Bloom’s character draining blood before a weigh-in. The reaction at the TIFF premiere was intense. “Somebody in my row passed out!” Bloom said.

The Cut isn’t just another boxing film, it’s a gritty look at the sacrifices fighters make to compete. It premiered as a Special Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival and shows a side of Bloom audiences have never seen before.
