Brad Pitt’s Mom Jane Pitt Dies at 84, Family Remembers Her Love and Legacy
Jane Pitt, the mother of actor Brad Pitt, has died at the age of 84. The news was shared by her granddaughter, Sydney Pitt, earlier this week through an Instagram post. Jane passed away on Tuesday, August 5, according to her official obituary.
She is survived by her husband, William Alvin “Bill” Pitt, and their three children, Brad, Doug, and Julie Neal.
Sydney Pitt, who is the daughter of Doug Pitt, wrote a touching tribute to her grandmother on Instagram. She shared several photos of Jane along with a message about what she meant to the family.
“My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier,” she wrote.
Sydney described Jane as someone with a big heart who cared deeply about people and never asked for anything in return.
“She taught me how to paint, how to be strong, how to lead with kindness, to love Jesus through everything, and to find joy in the smallest things,” she continued. “She made up the silliest games just to make us laugh, and she believed in fairness, in putting others first, and doing good simply because it was the right thing to do.”
She also remembered the fun moments she had growing up with Jane. Every year, before school started, Jane would take each of her 14 grandchildren out for a “special day” that included things like banana splits, board games, or trips to Silver Dollar City.
“She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat,” Sydney wrote. “There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it. I don’t know how we move forward without her. But I know she’s still here in every brushstroke, every kind gesture, every hummingbird. She was love in its purest form.”
Sydney ended her message with, “We were truly blessed to have her to love on growing up and I know she lives on through each of us.”
Jane Pitt was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and later moved to Springfield, Missouri, where she raised her family. She worked as an elementary school teacher and was known for her love of painting. Her passion for art became a big part of her relationship with her grandchildren, especially during craft time and painting lessons.
Her obituary described her as a talented artist who used painting to express herself. It also talked about the one-on-one traditions she had with each grandchild, known as “Your Special Day,” which are now some of the most cherished memories the family has.
Though she stayed mostly out of the public eye, Jane occasionally appeared at events with Brad, including the 2012 Oscars and the 2014 premiere of Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie.
Jane Pitt will be remembered not just as Brad Pitt’s mother, but as a loving grandmother, a caring teacher, and someone who made others feel important simply by being herself.
