Ana de Armas, Sydney Sweeney & Vanessa Kirby Battle for Survival in New ‘Eden’ Trailer
Ron Howard’s newest film Eden is making waves again with the release of its intense new trailer. The survival thriller, which features a star-studded cast including Ana de Armas, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, and Jude Law, is set to hit U.S. theaters on August 22. The movie is inspired by a true story and explores what happens when survival, ego, and ambition clash in one of the world’s most remote locations.
The film is based on a real series of events that took place on Floreana Island, part of the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. In 1929, a German couple, Dr. Friedrich Ritter and his partner Dora Strauch, leave behind modern society hoping to live in peace and solitude. They want a fresh start, to write his philosophical ideas and she to heal from multiple sclerosis. But their quiet life doesn’t last long.
Soon, other settlers arrive. Heinz and Margret Wittmer show up with dreams of their own. Then, things get even more complicated when a mysterious woman claiming to be a baroness shows up with two lovers and big plans to open a luxury hotel on the island. That’s when things take a darker turn. As the trailer shows, paradise quickly becomes a nightmare.
In the new R-rated trailer, we see glimpses of tension, wild landscapes, and the breakdown of trust between the island’s inhabitants. There’s a growing sense of paranoia, survival instincts kicking in, and a clear suggestion that not everyone makes it out alive.
Ana de Armas plays the glamorous but dangerous Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn. Jude Law takes on the role of Dr. Ritter, while Vanessa Kirby plays Dora Strauch. Sydney Sweeney portrays Margret Wittmer, one of the other settlers. Other cast members include Daniel Brühl, Richard Roxburgh, Felix Kammerer, and Toby Wallace.
Filming took place mostly in Queensland, Australia, with some additional scenes shot in the Galápagos. The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. Since then, it’s been picked up for distribution in multiple countries, including by Vertical for the U.S. market.
The project was first announced in 2022 under the working title Origin of Species. It went through a few casting changes during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, eventually landing on the current ensemble. Hans Zimmer composed the score, adding to the film’s dramatic tension.
Early reviews have been mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, Eden holds a 57% score based on 35 critic reviews. Metacritic reports a score of 60 out of 100, signaling a somewhat divided response.
Still, the trailer has sparked new interest. Many fans online are buzzing about the intense atmosphere and performances, especially from Ana de Armas. If the trailer is any indication, Eden is not just about surviving the wild, it’s about surviving each other.
