[Photos & Video] First Look: HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Shows Hagrid Leading Harry to Diagon Alley
HBO has given fans a first real look at its upcoming Harry Potter series with new set photos showing the cast in action. The new show is a full re-imagining of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books and follows the huge success of the Harry Potter movies and the Fantastic Beasts films. According to @WW_Direct, the latest images give viewers a closer look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter and a Hagrid body double played by Nick Frost.
In the photos, McLaughlin is seen wearing Harry’s signature round glasses, baggy clothes, and carrying a backpack. He is led across a busy London street by Frost’s Hagrid double toward a location that fans will recognize from the books. These images are giving fans their first proper glimpse of how the series is bringing the world of Harry Potter to life on screen, said sources familiar with production.

Dominic McLaughlin takes over the role originally played by Daniel Radcliffe, while Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton have been cast as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The series also stars John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost in supporting roles. The show is being produced by HBO Entertainment in partnership with Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films.
The project was first revealed to be in development in January 2021, with the plan to create a long-running series that stays faithful to the original books. Francesca Gardiner is serving as showrunner, and Mark Mylod is directing. Casting for the main roles began in November 2024. A casting call in September 2024 reportedly considered 32,000 actors before McLaughlin, Stout, and Stanton were confirmed for the lead roles in May 2025. Principal photography started in July at Leavesden Studios, a location known for its connection to the Harry Potter films.
The series was originally planned for HBO Max but was shifted to HBO by June 2024. The first season will have eight episodes and is expected to premiere in the United States in early 2027. Production sources say the series will cover major events from the books and recreate iconic moments, such as Harry’s early encounter with the Dursleys at the zoo, which fans have already seen in previous promotional photos.
This HBO series is shaping up to be a major event for both longtime fans and newcomers to the world of Harry Potter. By showing detailed set photos, the network is letting fans peek behind the scenes and see how the characters and magical locations are coming together.
