The first episode of Peacemaker Season 2 included a sizzle reel recapping Season 1, and it revealed a major change.

The Snyderverse Justice League has been replaced by DC’s newly canon Justice Gang. The updated lineup includes Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), the new Superman, David Corenswet, and Supergirl, Milly Alcock.

Fans weren’t surprised by the change, as director James Gunn had previously said that the Justice League scene would be addressed.

Gunn admitted that he would love to reshoot all of Season 1 to fit it perfectly into the DCU, but it would be too expensive. Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn explained which parts of the DCEU slide easily into the DCU canon.

One surprising addition he mentioned was Blue Beetle. He said, “Peacemaker was always in a weird place, people say he was always part of the DCEU but he wasn’t really. He was a part of this in-between universe of DC when there was nobody really making sure that everything was connected, and at a time when they were going rewrite everything with ‘The Flash.'”

“You know we were kinda able to do whatever we wanted. And we had that brash ending which I loved, It was one of my favorite things in the whole season but it just didn’t fit in with the DCU, and Peacemaker almost…there’s hardly anything that you need to change for him to slide into the DCU. Same with Blue Beetle. They just fit in very nicely. But maybe we have to retcon a few things. But this was the big one.”

Gunn has mentioned before that he wants Blue Beetle in the DCU. Recently, it was announced that an animated series for the character is in development, continuing Jaime Reyes’ story.

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are producing the series, with Miguel Puga as showrunner and director, Cristian Martinez as writer, and Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer executive producing alongside John Rikard. Galen Vaisman will oversee the project for DC Studios.

The animated series will expand on the movie but tell its own story instead of retelling the film. Xolo Maridueña, who plays Jaime Reyes, told reporters that the team is working hard on the project, aiming to finalize it in 2025 with a 2026 release.

He joked, “Hey man, arrest me! [laughs] I’m ready to come back. We’re hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year.”

Maridueña added that he trusts Gunn’s vision for the character and is excited for the future.

“Look, he’s got his hands in his kitchen. I don’t want to walk in while the chef is doing his thing. But I can say that once they’re finished with this three-course meal, I’m ready. And look, I have no reason to believe that he’s lying. Like, whatever, we’re adults, say whatever you want to say! [laughs] I’m just happy to have done this first one and I’ll continue to spread the word about that while we get the second one drafted up.”

It makes sense for Blue Beetle to join the newly formed DCU, especially with Booster Gold also getting his own standalone series. Fans can expect these characters to play bigger roles as the DC Universe continues to expand.
