Snoop Dogg says he’s now “scared to go to the movies” because of what he sees as growing LGBTQ+ content in children’s films.

The rapper, speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, shared a recent experience taking his grandson to see the 2022 Pixar movie Lightyear.

“What you see is what you see, and they’re putting it everywhere,” Snoop said. He explained that he was surprised to learn that one of the film’s characters has two mothers. “They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’”

Snoop admitted he didn’t know how to respond.

“Oh s***, I didn’t come in for this s***. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” he said. But his grandson kept asking questions, and the rapper said the situation left him uneasy. “They just said, she and she had a baby — they’re both women. How does she have a baby? It f***** me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s*** that I don’t have an answer for,” he explained.

“It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’”

Snoop, who is also a coach on The Voice, added that he feels young children are too young to see these stories. “These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer,” he said.

Lightyear tells the origin story of the famous Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Chris Evans. In the film, Buzz’s best friend Alisha Hawthorne, voiced by Uzo Aduba, is shown marrying and raising a child with her partner Kiko in a short montage.

This scene marked Disney’s first prominent LGBTQ+ character and its first same-sex kiss, which sparked controversy even before the film’s release. The kiss was almost cut, but Pixar employees pushed to keep it in the theatrical version.

Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., has faced criticism for similar comments in the past. He called Caitlyn Jenner a “science project” and used an anti-gay slur on Instagram in 2014.

After his recent remarks, some fans and commentators have called for him to be removed as the headline performer at the upcoming Australian Football League Grand Final.

Whether people agree or disagree with his views, Snoop’s comments have reignited discussions about LGBTQ+ representation in children’s movies and how parents navigate these conversations with their kids.
