Return to Silent Hill was first announced in October 2022. Filming took place in Germany and Serbia between April 2023 and February 2024.
According to reports, the movie is set to hit theaters in the United States on January 23, 2026, through Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing.
The story follows James Sunderland, who is devastated after being separated from his soulmate. When he receives a mysterious letter, it draws him back to Silent Hill. But the town has been twisted by an unknown evil force.
As James explores, he encounters terrifying figures, some familiar and some new, and struggles to understand what is real. “He tries to stay strong enough to rescue his beloved,” sources say.
The cast includes Jeremy Irvine as James, Hannah Emily Anderson as Mary, and Evie Templeton as Laura. Templeton also performed the motion capture and voice for Laura in the remake of the Silent Hill 2 video game.
Christophe Gans has been developing new screenplays based on the Silent Hill and Fatal Frame series since 2020.
Speaking to French magazine Allocine, he said he wanted the series to feel like an anthology, similar to The Twilight Zone, where any story could explore the psychological side of the town. “The film takes inspiration from P.T.,” Gans said in reference to the playable teaser for the cancelled game Silent Hills. He worked with Konami to redesign the monsters, including Pyramid Head, giving them a fresh look for the film.
Filming took place across multiple locations, including Belgrade and the German cities of Munich, Penzing, Nuremberg, and Lake Ammer.
The production was financed by Davis Films and Ashland Hill Media Finance and received €1 million from Germany’s FFY Bayern media funding program. Gans told reporters in February 2025, “I finished the film ten days ago. It was supposed to be finished in April 2024, but because of the executive producers, it dragged on and I finished it this January.”
