A Little History

First appearing in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134, Darkseid has grown into one of the DC Universe’s greatest and most powerful villains. Hailing from the planet Apokolips, Darkseid is only interested in acquiring a way to end all life throughout the Universe.

He is one of the New Gods. He first appeared, along with the other members of the New Gods, after a battle with evil in which the Old Gods died. Not only did the battle cost the Old Gods their lives, but their home planet was destroyed as well. Luckily, the debris from the planet reformed and came together as two new planets: New Genesis and Apokolips. After what seemed to be millennia, the New Gods spawned and appeared on their respective planets.

New Genesis was a lush, beautiful planet whereas Apokolips was a lifeless hell, ruled by Darkseid. The Life Equation or the source for all the life in the universe was housed on New Genesis. Darkseid made it his life’s work to attain The Life Equation’s opposite, the Anti-Life Equation.

When Orion, the champion of New Genesis caught wind that there was a new power rising on Apokolips, he ventured there in order to defeat it. When he arrived he learned that Darkseid had left for Earth. He did so because he learned that the Anti-Life Equation was created in the mind of an unsuspecting human.

Once there, he built the Mass Detector Unit. This was a unit capable of scanning the minds of every human to pinpoint exactly where the Anti-Life Equation was. Before he was able to use his machine, he was confronted by Orion and reminded of the peace treaty between New Genesis and Apokolips. Orion was able to best him in battle and he returned to Apokolips.

Unfazed by his defeat, he continued to pursue the Anti-Life Equation. Due to his lust for this, he has created numerous weapons and continues to wage war on Earth. After continually battling Orion, it was revealed the Darkseid was actually his father. Even knowing this, he eventually killed Orion.
