Marvel just confirmed one of the most anticipated reunions in Marvel history is happening again in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ The moment recalls one of the most electric scenes in the entire MCU, and this time it comes wrapped in a mystery Marvel has been quietly building since Steve first walked off into the sunset back in 2019.

New concept art showcased in Shanghai shows Steve Rogers will wield Mjolnir once again in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

Marvel has not yet explained exactly how it all fits together, though the studio is reportedly using Avengers: Endgame Encore, arriving in theaters on September 25 with additional footage, to help bridge the gap between Endgame and Doomsday before December. Reports also suggest Steve returns with Peggy Carter and their child playing a significant role in his motivations, potentially paralleling Doctor Doom’s own rumored family tragedy within the story.

Despite reclaiming Mjolnir, Steve reportedly will not take back the Captain America title, with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson remaining the MCU’s official Captain America while Steve takes on a Nomad inspired role instead. That distinction has helped calm fears among fans worried that Evans’ return might sideline Mackie’s ongoing storyline as the character’s successor.

The moment carries obvious emotional weight given how the MCU built Steve’s worthiness across nearly a decade of storytelling. Rogers first hinted at his worthiness in Age of Ultron when he was the only Avenger able to budge the hammer at all, choosing not to fully lift it out of respect for Thor before finally proving himself against Thanos in Endgame.

With Chris Evans confirmed to return alongside Robert Downey Jr and the Russo Brothers directing, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, and this Mjolnir reveal alone suggests Steve’s story is far from finished.
