Marvel Studios has spent the better part of this year building an unprecedented promotional runway toward ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and its latest move might be the boldest yet. Rather than just teasing the new film directly, the studio is sending fans back to relive one of its most iconic entries first.

That’s exactly what’s happening with ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore,’ a theatrical re-release of the Russo brothers’ 2019 blockbuster that’s set to hit theaters on September 25. Marvel has now dropped a new trailer for the rerelease, revisiting some of the film’s most iconic moments from its climactic final battle as the countdown to December continues.

What makes this rerelease more than pure nostalgia is what’s been added to it. The Encore version includes roughly four minutes of new footage not seen in the original 2019 cut, along with an exclusive look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ attached to every screening.

Fans watching on IMAX or Disney’s new Infinity Vision-certified screens will get an additional bonus, since those formats come with a second sneak peek at ‘Doomsday’ beyond what standard theaters will show. It’s part of a marketing strategy Marvel has leaned into throughout the ‘Doomsday’ rollout, having already used exclusive theater-only content tied to teasers attached to ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ earlier in the campaign.

The earlier trailer for the rerelease focused on spoiler-heavy moments that couldn’t be shown before the film’s original 2019 release, including the full portal sequence, Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir against Thanos, and Tony Stark’s final sacrifice. It’s a reminder of just how much weight ‘Endgame’ still carries with audiences seven years later, especially as Marvel gears up to close out this next chapter of the saga.

Beyond the new footage, eagle-eyed fans have also noticed subtle changes to the film itself. Side-by-side comparisons between the Encore trailer and the existing Disney+ version reveal noticeably different color grading, with Thanos and his army appearing more saturated and vivid than the washed-out tones many critics originally pointed to as a weakness in the Russos’ visual style.

That shift addresses a complaint that’s followed the Russo brothers’ Marvel work for years, as critics often described ‘Endgame’s’ color palette as flat and overly reliant on muted browns and grays, particularly during the climactic battle once the portal effects faded. The brighter, more comic-accurate grading gives longtime fans a genuinely different way to experience a film many have already seen dozens of times.

Not everyone is convinced the new footage will land seamlessly, though. Some fans online have speculated that the extra four minutes could simply amount to a bonus scene tacked onto the credits rather than anything woven into the main story, a theory that’s sparked plenty of debate about how exactly Marvel plans to fold new content into a film audiences already know by heart.

Regardless of how it’s structured, the timing makes clear exactly what Marvel is building toward. ‘Endgame’ originally grossed around $2.8 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film in history internationally, and this rerelease slots neatly between ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which arrives in theaters on December 18.

For a studio that’s spent the better part of a year fueling anticipation through trailers, presales, and record-breaking Disney+ viewership numbers, sending fans back to the moment that defined the Infinity Saga feels like the perfect bridge into its next one.
