Freddy Krueger could soon be returning to the big screen. Paramount Pictures has officially picked up the U.S. rights to a new A Nightmare on Elm Street project based on Wes Craven’s original screenplay, with plans to turn the iconic horror story into a new feature film.

The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, which revealed that the new movie will be released under Paramount’s recently launched horror-focused label, Paramount Primal. The label is being led by producers J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the team behind horror projects including Barbarian and Friendship.

The upcoming film will return to the world created by Wes Craven, the filmmaker behind the original 1984 classic that introduced audiences to Freddy Krueger, the dream-stalking killer with a burned face, striped sweater, fedora, and signature razor glove. While details about the story are being kept secret, the project is described as a new take based on Craven’s original screenplay.

The rights deal comes from the Wes Craven estate, which includes Craven’s widow, Iya Labunka, and his son, Jonathan Craven. Both will produce the new film alongside Marc Toberoff, a producer and entertainment attorney known for working on copyright-related projects. Lifshitz and Margules will serve as executive producers for Paramount Primal.

Labunka shared her excitement about bringing the franchise back for a new generation, saying, “We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans. We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theatre – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds.”

Lifshitz and Margules also spoke about their connection to the franchise and the responsibility of continuing Craven’s legacy. “We can’t remember a time before we were fans of Wes Craven. The fact that Iya and Jonathan have entrusted us with this opportunity to help usher a new story into this world is an honor beyond words. We look forward to working alongside them to bring a terrifying new nightmare to audiences everywhere, and to welcome Freddy home,” they said.

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984 and became one of the most successful horror movies of its era. The film helped turn New Line Cinema into a major Hollywood player, with the studio famously earning the nickname “the house that Freddy built.” The franchise later expanded with seven sequels, a 2010 remake, a television series, comic books, and countless merchandise.

For years, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. controlled the rights to the franchise. However, copyright laws allowed Wes Craven’s estate to regain control of the original screenplay rights in 2019. Marc Toberoff helped the estate with that process, and he was also involved in recovering rights for the original Friday the 13th screenplay.

The new movie does not yet have a director, cast, or release date. It is also unclear whether Freddy Krueger will return in his traditional form or if the filmmakers plan to completely reinvent the character.

Paramount Primal is focused on creating lower-budget genre films with new voices and established filmmakers. With the return of one of horror’s most recognizable villains, the studio is hoping to bring Freddy’s nightmare to a new generation of fans.
