Aardman’s Stop-Motion Pokémon Series Gets a New Teaser, and Here’s Everything We Know

Pokémon has conquered nearly every corner of entertainment over the past three decades, from video games and trading cards to a sprawling anime franchise that’s followed trainers across dozens of regions. What the brand hasn’t fully explored, until now, is a story told entirely from the perspective of the creatures themselves, without a single human trainer guiding the way.

That gap is about to be filled by one of animation’s most beloved studios. Aardman, the British team behind ‘Wallace & Gromit,’ ‘Chicken Run,’ and ‘Shaun the Sheep,’ first announced its partnership with The Pokémon Company back in December 2024, promising a stop-motion series unlike anything the franchise has attempted before.

That project just got its biggest update yet. A new teaser for ‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu’ debuted during a PokémonXP panel titled “Behind the Scenes with Aardman,” confirming the series will land exclusively on Disney+ worldwide sometime in 2027.

The panel, featuring director Tom Parkinson, creative director Natalie McKay, and creative lead James Young, revealed that the series will be a dialogue-free comedy, with neither Sirfetch’d nor Pichu speaking a single word throughout. That approach leans into Aardman’s long history of visual storytelling, relying on physical comedy and character work rather than dialogue to carry the show.

The series draws its setting from the Galar region introduced in ‘Pokémon Sword and Shield,’ pairing Sirfetch’d, the dignified and comically self-serious evolution of Farfetch’d, with Pichu, Pikachu’s playful and unpredictable pre-evolution. Every set and character is being built entirely by hand, with a team of 262 animators working to bring the stop-motion world to life.

Aardman chief creative director Sarah Cox spoke about the project’s creative direction earlier this year at Annecy, according to a report from Cooledtured, describing the show as a hand-crafted spin on familiar Pokémon characters built around comedic storytelling that celebrates their quirks and eccentricities as they explore Galar on an offbeat quest. She added that Aardman and Pokémon share a strong commitment to creativity and craft, calling the collaboration part of a shared mission to bring joy to audiences around the world.

The timing couldn’t be much better for Aardman, coming off the massive success of ‘Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,’ which became one of the biggest programs on UK television over Christmas 2024. That special reportedly became the most-watched animated show since records began, drawing a staggering 21.6 million viewers by the end of January.

That kind of recent success gives fans plenty of reason for optimism heading into this new collaboration. The show’s early teaser already leans into Aardman’s signature style, featuring a grazing Wooloo that closely resembles the studio’s beloved Shaun the Sheep character design, hinting at the kind of gentle, character-driven humor fans can expect once the series arrives.

With Disney+ locked in as the exclusive home for ‘Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu,’ fans now have a firm destination to look forward to once 2027 rolls around. Between Aardman’s proven track record and Pokémon’s massive built-in audience, this handcrafted spinoff looks positioned to reach viewers well beyond the franchise’s usual fanbase.

The series also marks a notable moment for Pokémon’s broader animation strategy, which has increasingly branched out into different visual styles and storytelling formats beyond its long-running mainline anime. Pairing that ambition with a studio as distinctive as Aardman gives this particular project a level of craftsmanship that few animated tie-ins in the franchise’s history have attempted.
