Aaron Pierre Reveals How He’s Handling ‘Lanterns” Record-Breaking Success

DC Studios has had a mixed track record convincing audiences to invest in its rebooted universe, but ‘Lanterns‘ has quickly become the exception fans were hoping for. The HBO series has spent the past month building the kind of sustained buzz that few comic book adaptations manage past their premiere weekend.

The show follows Lantern legend Hal Jordan and rookie John Stewart, two intergalactic cops pulled into a dark, earth-based murder mystery with cosmic ties. Created by Chris Mundy, with Damon Lindelof and comic book icon Tom King among its executive producers, the series has traded space battles for a grounded procedural tone that critics and casual viewers alike have responded to.

Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, is now addressing just how he’s processing that wave of attention. In an exclusive interview, Pierre made clear that while he isn’t someone who spends much time scrolling through social media, the show’s growing cultural footprint has still reached him in other ways.

“I’m rarely on the internet, but I do feel it outside of the context of the internet, and I feel an immense gratitude,” Pierre told ScreenRant. Rather than dwelling on the scale of the online conversation, memes, first reactions, and theories that have intensified with each new episode, Pierre framed his response around appreciation instead.

He went on to describe himself as deeply grateful for the opportunity, acknowledging that landing a role in a franchise of this size is something countless actors spend their careers hoping for, while expressing hope that he’ll keep working at this level for years to come.

That gratitude comes as ‘Lanterns’ has established itself as a genuine ratings phenomenon for HBO and HBO Max. The series premiered on August 16 to 9.3 million global viewers across its first three days, including 6.6 million in the United States, a debut that landed it among the platform’s top five series premieres and made it the biggest launch for a DC Studios series on HBO Max to date.

The momentum only grew from there. By its third episode, titled “OutKast,” which dug into John Stewart’s backstory, the show had climbed to 10 million global viewers and 7 million in the U.S. within its first three days, setting a new series high and outpacing its own premiere numbers. The pilot episode alone has since crossed 20 million total viewers worldwide. ‘Lanterns’ also debuted to an audience score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, a strong signal that the enthusiasm Pierre is describing isn’t confined to a vocal online minority.

Pierre’s path to the role has been years in the making. Known for his acclaimed performance in ‘The Underground Railroad’ and for carrying Netflix’s ‘Rebel Ridge,’ along with roles in ‘Mufasa: The Lion King,’ Pierre and Chandler were officially announced as the show’s leads back in October 2024, following what DC Studios head James Gunn described at the time as a long and demanding audition process.

That build-up appears to have paid off, both critically and commercially. With outlets ranging from Variety to Rolling Stone praising the show’s tone and lead performances, and with viewership continuing to climb well past the usual premiere drop-off, ‘Lanterns’ has quickly become one of the strongest arguments yet for DC Studios’ current approach to franchise television.
