Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley’s former relationship has suddenly become one of the biggest celebrity stories again after the NFL star opened up about their broken engagement. The pair spent much of their time together away from the spotlight, but their split became a major topic when the relationship ended without either person giving many details.

Rodgers said he proposed in December 2020 and claimed Woodley had removed her engagement ring by March, while reports at the time placed their public breakup in 2022. He further claimed that the pair attempted to reconnect but that the relationship was effectively over long before their split became public.

Those comments are especially striking because Woodley has previously spoken about the emotional impact of the relationship without revealing specific details about what caused their problems. In a 2024 interview with ‘Outside,’ she said discussing Rodgers still made her emotional and described the relationship as “not right. But it was beautiful.”

Woodley also described going through what she called a deeply traumatic period around early 2022. She said she experienced depression, anxiety and a feeling of being completely detached from herself, while also describing the situation she was in as toxic.

Her comments did not specifically explain what happened between the couple or address the allegation Rodgers has now made. That distinction is important because the latest claims come entirely from Rodgers’ side, and there has been no public confirmation from Woodley that his description of the engagement is accurate. PEOPLE reported that Woodley’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The former couple’s relationship had already attracted plenty of attention before the breakup. Woodley confirmed the engagement publicly in 2021 after Rodgers had referred to his fiancée while accepting an NFL MVP award, and the pair later went through an on-and-off period before their relationship finally ended.

Rodgers’ latest comments also come during a much wider conversation about his past relationships. During the same podcast appearance, he discussed former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick and argued that public stories about his romantic life often leave out important details, saying he wanted to challenge what he sees as misleading narratives about his past.

For Woodley, the breakup has remained a painful subject even years later, while Rodgers is now presenting a very different version of how the engagement fell apart. With neither side having publicly agreed on the full story, the latest revelation adds another complicated chapter to a relationship that has remained a source of fascination long after it ended.
