After Becoming a Huge Hit, New Chapter of ‘The Monster of Florence’ Is Coming to Netflix
Netflix is heading back into one of Italy’s most infamous criminal cases. Following the strong success of The Monster of Florence, the streaming platform has officially ordered a new chapter of the true-crime series and production is already underway.
The first installment premiered last fall and quickly became one of Netflix’s biggest international hits. The Italian series told the story of the investigation into the murders linked to the so-called Monster of Florence, a serial killer who terrorized parts of Italy for years. The show was also well received by critics and audiences, helping it become one of the platform’s most-watched non-English language titles.
According to details released by Netflix, the new chapter will consist of three episodes and will continue exploring different theories and suspects connected to the long-running case. While the first installment focused on one stage of the investigation, the upcoming episodes will move forward in time and examine another controversial chapter.
Director and co-creator Stefano Sollima confirmed that the series was always designed to work as an anthology, with each chapter focusing on a different suspect and a different part of the investigation.
“We always imagined The Monster of Florence as an anthology series: standalone stories, each dedicated to one of the different suspects in the series of crimes that shocked Tuscany and Italy between the 1970s and 1980s… An investigation that lasted over 30 years.”
The new episodes will focus heavily on Pietro Pacciani, one of the most well-known figures connected to the case. Pacciani became the main suspect in the murders that took place between 1968 and 1985. His legal battle attracted enormous attention in Italy and sparked years of debate among investigators, journalists, and the public.
Sollima explained why this particular chapter remains so fascinating and controversial.
“After focusing on the Sardinian suspects, this time we leap forward in time to address perhaps the most well-known, controversial, and debated chapter of the entire incident: the story of Pietro Pacciani, convicted and later acquitted of the crimes, and his alleged accomplices, the infamous ‘Snack Buddies,’ as the press dubbed them.”
He continued by highlighting why the case still captures attention decades later.
“Perhaps this is also why Pacciani’s case remains the most disturbing: guilt has never been proven, but also never completely ruled out.”
The creative team behind the first installment is returning for the new chapter. Sollima will once again direct the series and continues as co-creator alongside Leonardo Fasoli. Production is being handled by AlterEgo and Wildside, two companies with extensive experience producing successful Italian film and television projects.

The renewal is not surprising given how well the first chapter performed. In addition to attracting a large audience on Netflix, the series earned industry recognition and won the Nastro d’Argento Grandi Serie Award for Best Crime Series.

Netflix has not announced an official release date yet. However, with filming already in progress in Italy, viewers will likely have to wait until 2027 before the next chapter arrives. Until then, fans of true crime can look forward to another deep dive into one of Italy’s most mysterious and debated criminal investigations.
