Alan Cumming Says Nightcrawler Will Have Minimal Screen Time in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ – Here’s Why

When Marvel announced that the original X-Men actors were coming back, one of the biggest surprises was Alan Cumming. The actor played Nightcrawler only once, in 2003’s ‘X2: X-Men United’, and had never returned to the role. His comeback was a major moment for longtime fans, which is why every word he says about the film gets scrutinized.

Now Cumming has offered an update that may temper expectations. As the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ release approaches, he has been candid about how much of the film he’s actually in, and the answer is not much.

In a new interview, Cumming said Nightcrawler has some good moments but that his role is limited, because the movie is crowded with heroes. He described the sheer number of characters as nuts and has likened the film to a soup of superheroes. It echoes earlier comments in which he said he’s not in the film very much but had a lot of fun and found it lovely to go back.

The message is consistent across his interviews. Fans should expect Nightcrawler to make an impression, but not to be a major player in a story with so many characters.

Cumming has also described how hard the film was to follow. He said superhero scripts are tough to read because they’re mostly action and because everyone seems to have two names. He added that the script used secret names for some returning characters to prevent leaks, which made it confusing.

The secrecy fits Marvel’s approach to the film. The cast list is enormous, and the studio has kept most of its surprises under wraps, including the exact roles of many returning actors.

Another detail Cumming has shared is how he shot his scenes. He has said he filmed much of his part on his own, acting against green screens, partly because of a schedule that also included hosting ‘The Traitors’. He also said he worked with a few castmates but not many, since there were so many people involved.

That contrasts with fellow X-Men actor Rebecca Romijn, who has described a surreal day on set with 35 cast members filming together. The difference shows how large the production was and how scenes were split among different groups.

Despite the small role, Cumming has been positive about the experience. He had a difficult time making ‘X2’, in part because of the long makeup process, which took about four and a half hours. For ‘Doomsday’, advances in technology cut it to around 90 minutes.

He has said the return felt healing, and he praised the Russo brothers for making sure everyone on set felt valued. He has also joked about being a superhero at 60, and he has said he did his own stunts, learning a fight scene while reflecting on his age.

Cumming joins a group of returning X-Men that includes Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer, with Channing Tatum’s Gambit appearing alongside them. Footage shows Doctor Doom raising an army of Sentinels, the mutant-hunting robots, which suggests the X-Men will play a role in the story. One report speculated that Nightcrawler could face off with Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, though nothing has been confirmed.

Marvel’s own description frames the film as a collision of heroes from three universes, and the roster is huge. That helps explain why even popular characters may get only a handful of moments.

For fans hoping for a big Nightcrawler showcase, Cumming’s comments are a reminder to temper expectations. The teleporting mutant is likely to appear in a few key scenes rather than carry a storyline. It would still be a satisfying payoff for a character who has waited more than two decades for a second chance.

The film arrives in theaters on December 18, with Thursday previews expected the day before. By then, viewers will see for themselves how much room the ensemble leaves for each hero.

How much screen time should Nightcrawler get?
