Video game adaptations have become one of the most reliable bets in Hollywood, and Sony has been quietly building out its own slate of them for years. Now the studio’s live-action ‘Helldivers’ movie appears to be back in motion after a casting shake-up threatened to stall it out entirely.

The film has been in development since it was first announced in February 2026, with ‘Fast and Furious’ veteran Justin Lin attached to direct. Jason Momoa was set to lead the adaptation before quietly exiting the project in June, leaving Sony searching for a replacement to headline one of its bigger swings on gaming IP.

That search appears to have landed on Alan Ritchson. The ‘Reacher’ star is now in talks to step into the role Momoa vacated, according to The Hollywood Reporter, though a deal has not yet been finalized.

Momoa’s departure was reportedly tied to creative differences, according to sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, though specific details about what those disagreements involved have not been made public. He remains busy elsewhere in the video game adaptation space, with roles in October’s ‘Street Fighter’ and an upcoming ‘Minecraft’ sequel keeping his schedule full.

His exit left a notable gap for Sony to fill on a project built around a physically imposing lead. Ritchson has spent the past several years establishing himself as exactly that kind of action star, and landing ‘Helldivers‘ would mark his first true feature film headlining role after years of scene-stealing supporting parts.

For anyone unfamiliar with the source material, ‘Helldivers’ follows shock troopers fighting extraterrestrial threats on a fictional planet called Super Earth. The games are known for blending large-scale sci-fi combat with a satirical edge aimed at authoritarian propaganda and the idea of soldiers as disposable cogs in a much bigger war machine.

That tone has led to some skepticism about how Ritchson’s more traditionally heroic screen persona might translate to a story built around anonymous, expendable troopers rather than a singular chosen hero. Whether Lin’s script leans into that satire or plays the action more straight remains to be seen.

Lin’s involvement gives the project a filmmaker with plenty of experience handling large ensembles and big-budget action sequences, skills that translate well to a story rooted in coordinated squad-based combat. Sony has set a theatrical release date of November 10, 2027, though that timeline could still shift depending on how quickly the studio locks down its lead.

The move also fits into a broader pattern of studios turning to established action stars for major gaming adaptations, betting on built-in name recognition to help sell audiences on properties that may not have mainstream household name status yet. ‘Helldivers’ has built a passionate fanbase since its games launched, but translating that enthusiasm to a wide theatrical audience will likely depend heavily on who ends up leading the charge.

Ritchson’s rising profile since ‘Reacher’ debuted in 2022 has made him a natural fit for exactly this kind of casting search. If the deal closes, it would give Sony a recognizable face to build a marketing campaign around while keeping the production on track for its 2027 target.

It would also mark a significant shift in scale for Ritchson’s career. He has built a devoted fanbase through ‘Reacher’ and stacked up supporting credits elsewhere, but stepping into a tentpole studio release carries a different kind of pressure than television, where a loyal streaming audience can sustain a show for multiple seasons without needing to win over a wide theatrical crowd on opening weekend.

Nothing is official yet, and negotiations could still fall through the way Momoa’s involvement did earlier this year. Still, with Lin already in place and a release date on the calendar, Sony appears determined to keep ‘Helldivers’ moving forward one way or another.

The stakes are notable for Sony as well. The studio has invested heavily in expanding its gaming adaptations beyond the Spider-Man universe, and a stumble on casting this early in development is the kind of thing that can shadow a production long before cameras ever start rolling. Locking down a lead soon would go a long way toward reassuring fans that ‘Helldivers’ is still very much on track.

What do you think about Alan Ritchson potentially leading Helldivers?
