Few actors have built as much buzz around physical transformation as Alexander Skarsgård, whose evolving body has become almost as much a talking point as his acting career itself. From his early days on ‘True Blood’ to his more recent leading roles, the Swedish star has repeatedly reshaped his physique to match the demands of the character in front of him.

That reputation only grew with ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ back in 2016, when Skarsgård spent eight months working through a punishing two-phase training program, splitting his time between a three-month bulking period and a five-month shredding phase designed to carve out a lean, agile look suited to the jungle-set role. It set the tone for what would become a recurring pattern throughout his career: total physical reinvention for every major part.

Now, as Skarsgård approaches 50, details of his current training approach have resurfaced, and they’re every bit as demanding as the regimens that built his reputation in the first place. For ‘The Northman’ in 2022, the actor reunited with celebrity trainer Magnus Lygdbäck, who had previously guided his Tarzan transformation, this time chasing a bulkier, more powerful “Viking warrior” build rather than the leaner physique from years earlier.

That shift required Skarsgård to pack on roughly 20 pounds of muscle over eight months, training five days a week with a possible sixth session dedicated to active recovery or mobility work. Each of those five weekly sessions combined high-intensity interval training with traditional weightlifting, built around bodybuilding fundamentals in the 6-to-12 rep range across at least four dedicated weight-training days.

The program didn’t stop at weights, either. Skarsgård rounded out his training with yoga, ten-minute sprint sessions, and grueling obstacle-course circuits that included bear crawls, frog jumps, chin-ups, and hand-walking drills, all designed to build functional strength rather than purely aesthetic muscle. Core work was folded in every other day as well, alternating between static holds like planks and mountain climbers and rotational movements like cable wood chops and Russian twists.

Nutrition played just as central a role in the transformation as the workouts themselves. Skarsgård’s diet emphasized protein intake at roughly one gram per pound of bodyweight, aiming for a calorie surplus just above maintenance level to add muscle without excess fat. That approach reportedly included late-night protein and potato snacks to support recovery during the more demanding stretches of training.

The ‘Northman’ preparation notably continued even through disruption caused by COVID-19, which delayed the film’s production and forced Skarsgård to maintain his routine for stretches without his trainer physically present. That level of consistency has become something of a hallmark for the actor across multiple transformations, reinforcing just how disciplined his approach to physical preparation has remained over the years.

What makes Skarsgård’s current physique particularly notable is the age factor. Maintaining this level of muscle mass and definition while approaching 50 places him in the same conversation as other actors who’ve become known for defying typical expectations around fitness and aging in Hollywood, proving that foundational training principles, heavy compound lifts, disciplined nutrition, and consistent recovery, remain effective regardless of the decade.

For fans who’ve followed Skarsgård’s physical evolution across roles like Tarzan and Amleth, this latest look at his training routine offers a clear picture of just how much sustained effort goes into maintaining that kind of physique well into his fifth decade.
