Alexander Skarsgård Just Achieved His Wildest Career Dream, and It Involves Nipples Made Out of Wicker in a New Trailer for ‘Wicker’

Actors often talk about chasing prestige roles or finally landing their dream part, the kind of role that pushes them creatively in ways nothing else has. For Alexander Skarsgård, that dream apparently looked a little stranger than most, and it just came true in the most literal way possible.

Skarsgård has built a career on shape-shifting between brooding vampires, unhinged tech moguls, and physically demanding action roles, making him one of Hollywood’s more unpredictable leading men. His latest transformation, however, might be his most unexpected yet, trading fangs and muscle for something considerably more woven.

That transformation comes courtesy of ‘Wicker,’ an offbeat comedic fable from directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, which has now unveiled its first trailer. The film stars Olivia Colman as an ostracized fisherwoman who, after enduring endless mockery from her judgmental village for being single, commissions the local basketmaker to weave her the perfect husband, resulting in Skarsgård’s fully wicker-crafted love interest.

Skarsgård himself couldn’t hide his enthusiasm about finally landing the role. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor joked that most male performers dream of playing Hamlet at some point, but his own dream was something entirely different: “My dream was always to have nipples made out of wicker.”

That dream became a physical reality thanks to an elaborate costume built by the artists at Wētā Workshop in New Zealand, the same effects studio behind decades of major fantasy productions. The resulting look has already generated buzz for just how committed and exaggerated the transformation appears in the trailer, right down to Skarsgård’s fully textured, woven exterior.

Colman, who leads the film as the Fisherwoman, has been equally vocal about her enthusiasm for the project, describing the script as one of the most original she’d read in years and praising how much Skarsgård’s costume elevated the film’s strange central romance. She’s also spoken about being drawn to her character specifically because of how much she refuses to conform to the expectations placed on her by the rest of the village.

‘Wicker’ is adapted from Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story “The Wicker Husband,” and the film’s premise leans fully into its bizarre concept, following the chaos and jealousy that erupts once the other villagers realize just how devoted Colman’s woven husband turns out to be. The cast also includes Peter Dinklage as the enigmatic Basketmaker responsible for bringing Skarsgård’s character to life, along with Elizabeth Debicki as a skeptical neighbor unsettled by the arrangement.

The film previously premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to strong reviews, currently holding a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its festival run. Shot by ‘The Brutalist’ cinematographer Lol Crawley, the movie is set for a limited theatrical release beginning October 23, before expanding wider on October 30.

With its blend of absurdist comedy, unexpected romance, and genuinely striking practical effects, ‘Wicker’ is shaping up to be one of the more unusual awards-adjacent releases of the fall season. Whether audiences embrace its offbeat premise the way festival crowds already have remains to be seen, but Skarsgård’s commitment to the role alone has already made it one of the year’s most talked-about trailers.
