Dr. Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, was one of the rare DC characters that was introduced in an animated series and later introduced to DC Comics. Are Harley Quinn’s movie appearances connected? What’s the best way to watch them?

As I’ve mentioned, there are numerous Harley Quinn appearances in movies that stand alone in their stories and aren’t really connected to other films on the list in any way. Some, however, are connected and belong to the same universes.

For instance, Margot Robbie’s famous portrayal of Harley Quinn in both ‘Birds of Prey’ (2020) and ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021) belong to the same universe. The best way to watch these films in order, however, is to watch Suicide Squad’ (2016) first to see Robbie’s first portrayal of Harley and then the two movies I’ve mentioned earlier to see her progress in the role.

As for most other movies on the list, they either work as standalone projects, or Harley’s role is minor, so chronological continuity pays little to no meaning. Apart from the DCEU movies, I suggest you should watch all of Harley Quinn’s movie appearances in release order, but even if you don’t, you won’t miss out on a lot of storyline continuity.

Harley Quinn’s movie appearances in chronological order

Seeing that most of these films aren’t connected to each other because they belong to different universes entirely, the iterations of Harley Quinn are also different. For that reason, you shouldn’t try figuring out a chronological order of events – because it doesn’t exist when speaking of all Harley Quinn movie appearances together.

For that reason, I believe you should watch these movies by release date because then you at least get to see how the character grew and changed over the years. Let’s learn a little bit more about each movie on this list.

1. ‘The Batman Superman Movie: World’s Finest’ (1997)

harley quinn the batman superman movie worlds finest

In Harley Quinn’s first movie appearance, she was in a cameo role in 1997’s ‘The Batman Superman Movie: World’s Finest. In the film, Joker ventures into Metropolis to join Lex Luthor and kill Superman, while Batman follows close behind. Harley was voiced by Arleen Sorkin.

2. ‘Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker’ (2000)

harley quinn batman beyond return of the joker

‘Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker’ came out as sort of a spinoff on the TV series, ‘Batman Beyond.’ the Joker is back and more dangerous than ever, but Gotham’s new Batman has to deal with him alone. Arleen Sorkin voiced Harley once again, and her role was minor as the film focused more on the Joker.

3. ‘Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox’ (2013)

I liked this portrayal of Harley Quinn as it was a speedster version of Harley, known as Yo-Yo. She was voiced by Hynden Walch here, whereas Michael B. Jordan’s Cyborg eventually caught her.

4. ‘Batman: Assault on Arkham’ (2014)

harley quinn batman assault on arkham

‘Assault on Arkham’ was an epic animated film stemming from the popular ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ video game. Harley Quinn joined Task Force X, aka the Suicide Squad, in full feature length for the first time.

5. ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016)

harley quinn suicide squad 2016

The 2016 ‘Suicide Squad’ had Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) as one of the lead characters, and she was arguably the biggest positive you could find about the whole thing. She was quirky, interesting, wild, and everything else Harley should be.

6. ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ (2017)

harley quinn lego batman

‘The Lego Batman Movie’ revolves heavily around Bruce Wayne being as cool as he can while also realizing he accidentally adopted a teenager. He deals with a lot of the usual Gotham City villains, and Joker and Harley Quinn are among them. It’s a hilarious film in which Jenny Slate gives her voice to Harley.

7. ‘Batman Vs. Two-Face’ (2017)

harley quinn batman vs two face

Harley Quinn in this movie isn’t what you’d usually expect. Instead, she is still Dr. Harleen Quinzel. Although the movie focuses on the conflict between Batman and Two-Face, I loved the little backstory of the beginning of Harleen and the Joker’s toxic relationship. Sirena Irwin voiced Dr. Quinzel.

8. ‘Batman and Harley Quinn’ (2017)

harley quinn batman and harley quinn

Poison Ivy and the Floronic Man are threatening the world, so Batman and Nightwing have to ask Harley Quinn for her help, as she was once friends with Ivy. The film is quite light and funny, and I liked the fact that Harley was somewhat of a hero or antihero, at least.

9. ‘Scooby-Doo & Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ (2018)

harley quinn scooby doo batman

Yup, Scooby and Batman teamed up more than once, actually. In this particular film, villains from both worlds team up to wreak havoc, so the mystery-solving crew and the best-capped detective ever have to team up to find answers. Naturally, both the Joker and Harley Quinn are a part of the villain’s ensemble. Tara Strong voiced Harley.

10. ‘Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay’ (2018)

harley quinn suicide squad hell to pay

Tara Strong once again gave her voice to Harley Quinn for this film, only this time, this was no Scooby-Doo action. This was bloodier, and Harley Quinn was still her quirky self – but more violent. The premise was similar to ‘The Suicide Squad’ DCEU movie – Amanda Waller hired a group of villains to do her dirty work – in this case, to find an artifact.

11. ‘Batman Ninja’ (2018)

harley quinn batman ninja

You’ll probably love this take on Batman because it’s just different than what we’re used to. It’s really an anime film, and all the versions of characters are quite unique – including Harley, once again voiced by Tara Strong.

12. ‘The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part’ (2019)

harley quinn lego movie 2

Another cameo role for Harley Quinn came in ‘The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part’, where the writers clearly referenced Margot Robbie’s take on Harley Quinn. Funnily enough, that short scene where Harley Quinn appears was voiced by Margot Rubin – not Robbie.

13. ‘Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ (2019)

harley quinn batman vs tmnt

Batman teamed up with a lot of different characters from various universes outside of DC Comics. His team-up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was quite intriguing, as in this movie, both the Joker and Harley Quinn are actually transformed into creatures. Harley (Tara Strong) is actually a mutated humanoid hyena.

14. ‘Batman: Hush’ (2019)

harley quinn batman hush

‘Batman: Hush’ is a very cool Batman story based on a 2002 graphic novel, where Bruce has to confront his past if he wants to deal with the present. I love the take on Harley Quinn in this film, though, as she’s back to her old crazy self, battling another awesome, beloved female character from DC Comics – Catwoman. Hynden Walch again voices Harley.

15. ‘Birds of Prey’ (2020)

harley quinn birds of prey

This is one of those DCEU films we spoke about earlier, and it depicts Margot Robbie’s Harley finally emancipating and breaking up with the Joker. The movie’s full title is actually ‘Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn’ – and the team is comprised of other insanely awesome female villains/antiheroes/vigilantes.

16. ‘Justice League Dark: Apokolips War’ (2020)

harley quinn justice league dark apokolips war

This is one of my favorite DCAMU films in the past decade. Darkseid took over Earth and killed many heroes and villains – including Amanda Waller and even the Joker. Harley Quinn becomes the leader of the Suicide Squad, trying to take down Darkseid while still seeking vengeance for the Joker’s death. Hynden Walch does an amazing job voicing Harley again.

17. ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021)

harley quinn the suicide squad

The second iteration of DCEU’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ was done by James Gunn, and it was arguably better than the first film. Despite most of the characters and actors changing, Margot Robbie remained the infamous Harley Quinn and probably had her best performance as Harley to date.

18. ‘Injustice’ (2021)

harley quinn injustice

‘Injustice’ takes place in a different universe, where the Joker tricks Superman into killing a pregnant Lois Lane – and, of course, Harley Quinn helps him. It sends Superman into a spiral that threatens the world and forces Justice League members to go against each other.

19. ‘Scooby-Doo! And Krypto, Too!’ (2023)

harley quinn scooby doo and krypto too

This is the most recent crossover between Scooby-Doo and DC. Tara Strong returns as Harley Quinn in the film while Scoob, his team, and Krypto the Superdog try to figure out why Justice League members keep disappearing.

20. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ (TBR 2024)

harley quinn joker folie a

Last but not least, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Joker’ (2019), starring Joaquin Phoenix, is finally arriving in 2024. The film will have a completely new iteration of Harley Quinn, portrayed by Lady Gaga.

Where to watch the above-mentioned movies?

All of these movies are available to buy or rent on Amazon Prime Video and other buy/rent platforms such as Apple TV, Google Play, or Vudu. Also, most of them are available for streaming on Max – granted, some of them might not be there, especially if Warner Bros didn’t produce them.

You’ll surely be able to find all of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn movie appearances on Max, as well as most DCAMU films, such as ‘Batman Ninja,’ ‘Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox,’ ‘Batman: Hush,’ ‘Batman Vs. Two-Face,’ etc.

Will there be more movies featuring Harley Quinn?

Yes, of course! One live-action film is already highly anticipated and on this list – ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is arriving in 2024, starring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. No Margot Robbie-led Harley Quinn films are currently announced, but never say never – I’m sure fans would absolutely love for that to happen. After all, James Gunn did confirm she’ll return to the DCU.

Also, seeing how popular the character is and how many different iterations we’ve already seen, it’s only a matter of time before we’ll see another Harley depicted in one of DC’s animated films, too.
