‘Clayface’ Shows Strong Legs Overseas as DC’s Body Horror Heads Toward a Global Milestone

DC Studios has had a bruising year at the box office, and the pressure on every new release has been impossible to miss. ‘Supergirl’ grossed just $126.4 million worldwide against a reported budget of $170 million or more, while ‘Superman’ reportedly cost $225 million to make. Against that backdrop, a smaller and stranger DC project was always going to be judged on a different curve.

That project is ‘Clayface‘, an R-rated body horror directed by James Watkins from a script by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Tom Rhys Harries stars as Hollywood actor Matt Hagen, with Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, David Dencik and Eddie Marsan also in the cast. The film rolled out internationally on October 21 and in North America on October 23, opening at No. 1 with $43 million worldwide.

Now the Clayface box office story has a new chapter. The film grossed $12.4 million overseas on its second weekend, a drop of just 34.7%, lifting its international cumulative total to $38.9 million across 76 markets. Add the $44.1 million it has earned in the United States and Canada, and the worldwide total stands at $83 million.

Those overseas holds are the strongest sign yet that audiences outside America are responding. The opening frame brought in $19 million from international markets, so a 34.7% dip is a fairly gentle decline for a horror-leaning comic book film. Box office watchers now expect the movie to cross the $100 million mark at the global box office next weekend.

The domestic side is more modest. After a $24 million debut from 3,458 theaters, the film earned $10.4 million over Halloween weekend, just behind A24’s ‘You Can See Everything’, which held the top spot with $10.6 million. Even so, the North American total has climbed to $44.1 million after 10 days.

The key to the film’s success is its price tag. ‘Clayface’ carries a reported production budget of $44 million, although some outlets list it closer to $40 million, and that figure does not include marketing. Its worldwide total is now within about $5 million of doubling that cost. Marketing spending and the studio’s share of ticket sales still matter, though, so true profitability depends on how the film performs over the coming weekends.

Break-even is harder to pin down. Hollywood tentpoles often need to earn back roughly two and a half times their budgets, which would put this film’s estimated break-even near $110 million. With $83 million already banked after only 10 days, it looks on track to get there.

That helps explain why the studio is in a very different position than it was after ‘Supergirl’. Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian has described the film as a good example of a studio taking a chance on R-rated horror, and the early returns suggest the gamble is paying off.

The projections vary. Some box office estimators have the film finishing between $130 million and $150 million worldwide, which would comfortably clear the break-even mark. Reaching that range would also leave it well ahead of the $126.4 million ‘Supergirl’ managed during its entire run.

Audience goodwill should help. ‘Clayface’ earned an A- CinemaScore and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics are more split, with a 75% rating and a Metacritic score of 59. Reviews broadly praise Harries and the gleefully gruesome practical effects, even if some critics wanted more depth.

The modest scale may be the point. Where earlier DC releases swung for mega-budget spectacle, this one leans into body horror, a genre that can thrive on a relatively small investment. If the strong overseas holds continue, ‘Clayface’ could become a model for how DC approaches its lesser-known characters.

For now, the picture is encouraging without being dazzling. The film is not a record-breaker, but it is stable, profitable-looking and still adding to its total in 76 international markets. It also arrives as a rare piece of good news after a rough year for the studio.
