Amazon Is Already Eyeing Another Spider-Man Series After Cancelling Critically Acclaimed Hit
Amazon’s ambitions to build out its own corner of the Spider-Man universe have hit a bump, even as the streamer signals it isn’t backing away from the effort entirely. The push began years ago through a multi-title deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, designed to mine Sony’s vast catalog of Marvel characters tied to the wall-crawler’s world.
That partnership has had a rocky start so far. The first project greenlit under the deal, a Spider-Man spinoff called ‘Silk: Spider Society’ with Angela Kang attached as showrunner, was ultimately scrapped before it ever made it to screen, leaving the second series ordered to become the first to actually air.
That series was ‘Spider-Noir,’ and despite strong reviews and considerable buzz, Amazon has now canceled it after just one season. According to Deadline, however, the streamer is already eyeing a greenlight for another series based on Sony’s broader universe of Marvel characters, suggesting the setback won’t derail the larger collaboration.
‘Spider-Noir’ starred Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a private investigator in 1930s New York whose past life as the city’s only superhero eventually catches up with him. Filmed in both color and black-and-white, the series premiered on Prime Video on May 27 and was developed for television by Oren Uziel, with Steve Lightfoot serving as co-showrunner alongside him.
By nearly every critical measure, ‘Spider-Noir’ performed well. The series earned a 92% critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with 11 Emmy nominations, the most of any Prime Video series in 2026.
Viewership numbers told a similarly strong story out of the gate, with the show debuting at number 2 on Nielsen’s U.S. streaming chart for original series and racking up 851 million minutes viewed in its first week. Over its first six weeks, that number climbed to 2.6 billion viewing minutes total, though the show reportedly dropped out of Prime Video’s daily Top 10 relatively quickly and failed to sustain that early momentum.
Deadline reports that cost ultimately played a major role in the decision not to renew, given how expensive the production reportedly was to produce in dual color formats. With streaming renewals increasingly tied to the balance between production budget and sustained audience performance, the show’s cost-to-viewership ratio appears to have outweighed its critical acclaim and awards recognition.
Despite the cancellation, Deadline indicates the broader Amazon-Sony collaboration remains very much alive, with multiple projects still in active development. One of those projects is reportedly nearing a series order, meaning fans could see Amazon officially greenlight its next Spider-Man-adjacent show in the near future.
Exactly which character might anchor that next series remains unclear, though Sony’s oversight reportedly spans more than 900 Marvel characters connected to the Spider-Man franchise, giving the studio no shortage of options to pull from. Given how quickly Silk was scrapped and how briefly Spider-Noir lasted, Amazon appears determined to find the right fit before committing to another full season order.
The timing is also notable given Sony’s continued success with its Spider-Man film franchise elsewhere. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ recently crossed $900 million at the domestic box office and has surpassed $2.3 billion globally, showing that appetite for the character’s wider universe remains as strong as ever, even if translating that success to television has proven trickier.
Whether the next series manages to find the staying power that ‘Spider-Noir’ ultimately lacked remains to be seen. For now, fans of Sony’s Marvel characters will have to wait for an official announcement on what Amazon has planned next.
Which Spider-Man character should Amazon and Sony build their next series around?
