The new “Masters of the Universe” film opened in second place at the North American box office with an estimated $29.3 million. The movie is a large-scale fantasy action adventure based on the classic Mattel toy line and animated series.

Despite the strong brand recognition, the opening is being viewed as softer than expected for a film with a production budget close to $200 million, not including marketing costs.

The film’s financial situation means it will need strong performance in the coming weeks to move toward profitability. Theaters typically keep around half of ticket sales, which adds more pressure on long-term box office results. Early audience turnout was heavily driven by long-time fans of the original 1980s franchise, especially those familiar with the He-Man character.

Industry analyst Gross described the opening as modest for a franchise-driven action film. He also pointed out that fantasy-based hero films outside of major superhero franchises are currently facing a tougher market.

As he noted, “This is a soft opening for an action adventure with franchise and series potential,” and added that “right now, the only fantasy heroes doing strong business are the biggest and most established superheroes, like Spider-Man, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Superman.”

The film is part of Mattel’s growing push to expand its toy brands into live-action cinema, following the massive success of “Barbie.” However, unlike that film, “Masters of the Universe” appears to be leaning more heavily on nostalgia-driven audiences rather than broad mainstream appeal in its opening weekend.

Audience data suggests that younger viewers responded positively. According to PostTrak surveys, children under 12 gave the film a 96% “definite recommend” score, showing strong reception among family audiences. This could help the movie maintain steady attendance over time if that positive word of mouth spreads.

Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief, responded to early criticism of the box office results and pushed back against the idea that the film is underperforming. He emphasized that the studio sees the opening as a strong foundation rather than a disappointment.

Wilson said in a statement, “This weekend represents a very solid start for ‘Masters of the Universe’ and the passionate, multigenerational audience response we’re seeing around the world has been fantastic.”

He also praised the creative team behind the film, adding, “Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy—building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.”

The studio’s position is that the film is designed for long-term audience growth rather than a single strong opening weekend. They are pointing to global interest and strong family audience scores as signs that the movie could build momentum over time.

Still, the road ahead is challenging. With a high production cost and a competitive release landscape, “Masters of the Universe” will need sustained attendance and international support to reach profitability. The coming weeks will be important in determining whether the film can shift from a soft debut into a longer-running success story.
