‘American Horror Story’ Star Sarah Paulson (51) Shows Some Leg in a Sequin-Studded Mini With a Train, and the Academy Museum Gala Is Still Blinking

Sarah Paulson has never been afraid of a fashion risk. W Magazine has even traced how she became one of the red carpet’s most reliable risk-takers, moving from early stage-actress A-line gowns to high-concept looks for Ryan Murphy productions. So when the Academy Museum Gala rolled around, there was good reason to expect something with an edge.

The sixth annual event took place on October 17 in Los Angeles, dubbed the “Met Gala of the West” and timed right after Fashion Month. Charlize Theron, Colman Domingo and John Carpenter were honored, Taylor Swift was set to perform, and Rolex presented the night. Compared with last year’s more daring moments, this year’s carpet was described as comparatively low-key, which made any big swing stand out.

Paulson swung. Sarah Paulson’s Academy Museum Gala look was a glittering, long-sleeved mini dress covered in large gold-and-black sequin discs, with a high neckline, a cutout at the side and a dramatic train spilling out behind her.

In the carpet clip, the dress catches the light in every direction, with the discs flashing gold and black as she moves. The hemline sits well above the knee, so the focus lands on her legs, while the sleeves and neckline keep the top half covered. That balance between modest coverage and a daring hem is what gives the look its tension.

She kept the styling sleek, with her hair slicked back off her face, long drop earrings and black heels. The train does the theatrical work, pooling behind her like a metallic tail and turning a short dress into a full red carpet entrance.

This is not the first time she has gone bold at this event. At the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, she wore an ab-baring Prada number, and she attended that year’s gala with her partner Holland Taylor. The two have been together since 2015.

Her willingness to show skin or play with proportions has been consistent. Where 2024 was about a sleek, cropped silhouette, this year’s look trades minimalism for shine.

Her 2026 fashion calendar has been unusually adventurous. At the Met Gala, she wore a custom red-grey tulle ball gown from Matières Fécales’ “The ONE Percent” collection, finished with white opera gloves and a leather mask made to look like a dollar bill over her eyes. The look divided opinion, with some defending it as a pointed statement and others dismissing it as tone deaf.

At the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, she delivered silhouette severity in a blunt bob and a structured, waist-cinching white ballgown. At the Tony Awards, she went soft in a drop-waist, two-toned Erdem gown adorned with bows. Next to those, a sparkly mini with a train looks like another entry in a very varied year.

The fashion attention builds on a career that has made her a household name. Paulson is an Emmy winner and the actress most closely tied to Ryan Murphy’s ‘American Horror Story’ and ‘American Crime Story.’ She also made a guest appearance on ‘The Bear,’ playing Cousin Michelle.

She received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in a ceremony on December 2, 2025, with Taylor at her side. That kind of milestone helps explain why every carpet appearance now gets so much scrutiny.

Paulson was far from the only star turning heads. Laura Linney, Pamela Anderson, Kristen Wiig, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake were among the guests, with Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller, Amber Valletta and designer Tom Ford also in attendance.

In a field packed with film-world names, her mini stood apart by leaning into texture and shine rather than a classic gown shape. Sequins might be a gala staple, but this version felt more playful than formal.

The look succeeds because it commits to a single idea, which is shine. The slicked-back hair and simple accessories keep the focus on the dress, and the train gives it enough drama to hold its own among the longer gowns.

It also fits her recent run of looks that mix humor, shape and surprise. Whether it ends up on best-dressed lists or not, it is the kind of outfit that gets people talking.

What do you think of Sarah Paulson’s gold-and-black sequin mini dress with a dramatic train at the 2026 Academy Museum Gala?
