Angel Batista Is Back for ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 Despite Being Dead

‘Dexter‘ has never been shy about resurrecting characters fans thought were gone for good, whether through flashbacks, hallucinations, or the ghostly presence of Dexter Morgan’s late father, Harry. That tradition of blurring the line between life and death has become one of the franchise’s defining tricks, and it’s a big reason fans keep coming back even decades after the original series ended.

‘Dexter: Resurrection’ leaned into that legacy hard in its first season, killing off Angel Batista, one of the last original Miami Metro characters still standing from the 2006 show. Leon Prater shot the retired detective multiple times inside his private vault, right at Dexter’s feet, in what felt like a definitive send-off for a fan-favorite.

That’s what made it so surprising when David Zayas was recently spotted filming alongside series lead Michael C. Hall in the middle of New York’s Times Square. According to Deadline, Zayas is officially returning to the role of Angel Batista for the second season of ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ despite the character’s death never having been undone.

Deadline reported that Batista is, in fact, still dead, and that how exactly the show plans to bring him back onscreen has not yet been revealed. Social media videos from the set reportedly show Batista and Dexter finding one another and embracing warmly, surrounded by extras and curious tourists who stumbled onto the shoot.

Zayas was seen on location dressed in the character’s signature tropical shirt, a straw fedora, and his familiar leather gun holster, giving fans plenty to speculate about ahead of any official confirmation. He also posed for photos with showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, along with executive producer Marcos Siega, during the shoot.

The most likely explanation ties back to a device ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ already leaned on during its first season, when Dexter experienced coma-induced visions of people he had lost. Speaking about Batista’s future on the show during an interview with Gold Derby, Hall suggested it’s reasonable to expect that Angel will keep living on in Dexter’s mind and heart, and hinted the show might dig further into that idea.

That would fit neatly with ‘Dexter’s’ long-running use of Harry Morgan as a hallucinated moral compass throughout the original series, giving the show a built-in mechanism to bring Batista back without technically undoing his death. Whether Batista appears as a vision, a memory, or something else entirely remains one of the season’s biggest mysteries heading into production.

Batista won’t be the only familiar face back for Season 2. Uma Thurman, reprising her role as Charley, was also spotted filming in Times Square around the same time as Zayas and Hall, alongside returning cast members including Jack Alcott, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Sarif, Dominic Fumusa, and James Remar.

The new season is also adding some heavyweight names to the mix, including Brian Cox as a notorious serial killer referred to as the New York Ripper, a character previously teased during Season 1 through case files uncovered by Dexter and Detective Wallace. Per the season’s setup, Dexter finds himself caught between two dangerous killers while also wrestling with what’s been described as a full-blown midlife crisis, all while Harrison continues carving out his own path toward justice alongside his father.

With a stacked cast, a returning fan-favorite, and a killer even more infamous than anything Season 1 threw at Dexter, ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 already looks positioned to raise the stakes considerably. Fans will just have to wait and see exactly how Batista fits back into the story once cameras stop rolling.
