The cult horror hit Grave Encounters is getting a brand-new reboot, nearly 15 years after the original film first terrified audiences.

The announcement came on September 18, 2025, from the writers of both the original movie and its 2012 sequel. They revealed that production on the new version is scheduled to begin next year.

The 2011 Canadian found-footage film, written, directed, and edited by the Vicious Brothers, followed a paranormal reality TV crew as they locked themselves inside a supposedly haunted psychiatric hospital.

The movie became famous for its viral trailer, which racked up over 30 million views before its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 22, 2011. Grave Encounters later had a limited U.S. theatrical release and was made available on video-on-demand in August 2011.

Despite a modest $120,000 budget, the film earned more than $5 million at the box office and developed a loyal fan base, even as critics noted it could feel repetitive.

The original creators, Minihan and Ortiz, are teaming up with Justin Long, who they previously worked with on Coyotes, to bring a fresh take on the story. In a joint statement, Long’s collaborators, Long and Bosworth, said, “Our creative connection with Colin was undeniable on ‘Coyotes’ and we wanted to continue that relationship as quickly as possible. He is a very rare combination of brilliant filmmaker and fun collaborator, and we are thrilled to help him resurrect a new imagining of one of his first horror gems, ‘Grave Encounters.’ “

‘Grave Encounters’ has such a passionate fan base, and we include ourselves among them. We hope to honor the legacy of the original film, while unleashing something even darker.”

Minihan and Ortiz added, “We made ‘Grave Encounters’ in our 20s on a self-financed shoestring budget, and it scared the hell out of people. Justin has defined genre cinema for over a decade and he’s the definitive scream king. He’s the perfect choice to reimagine ‘Grave Encounters’ for a new generation.”

The original Grave Encounters is remembered as a scary, if slightly repetitive, cult classic. Fans of supernatural horror are clearly excited to see how the new team will push the story into even darker territory.

This reboot could be a lot of fun, especially if it keeps the suspense and creativity of the original while updating it for modern audiences. What do you think? Are you excited to see Grave Encounters return? Share your thoughts in the comments.
