Marvel’s ‘VisionQuest‘ arrived carrying a lot of baggage. As the final chapter of a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’, it had to satisfy fans, honor Vision’s story and justify bringing a fan-favorite villain back in a major way.

The 8-episode series premiered on Disney+ in mid-October, and the early response was strong but mixed. Critics praised Paul Bettany and James Spader, while some pointed to a heavy focus on backstory and long stretches of characters explaining things to each other.

The audience has had its say, too, and the newest numbers show the show peaking at the right time. The penultimate chapter, ‘Immolation’, has earned an 8.8 on IMDb, making it the highest-rated episode of the series so far.

Looking back at the first 6 episodes shows a steady upward trend. Episode 1, ‘No Strings’, held a 7.9 on IMDb, the lowest score of the run, while ‘Theseus’ sat at 8.1 and ‘Reboot’ at 8.0.

From there, ‘Malware’ jumped to 8.5, ‘Firewall’ dipped slightly to 8.1 and the sixth episode reached 8.6. ‘Immolation’ now tops all of them, which means the show has mostly climbed since its opening hour.

IMDb scores tend to shift in the days after an episode airs, so the numbers may still move. Right after launch, the first 2 episodes were reportedly rated 8.7 and 8.8 before settling lower, a reminder of how much early scores can swing. Even so, the pattern is clear: viewers are responding most strongly to the show’s later chapters.

‘VisionQuest’ Episode 7 Recap and Ending Explained: The Client Wears Ultron’s Face

The episode, released on Nov. 3, is a deep dive into Vision’s identity. It flashes back to Phineas Horton, played by Bettany, and sends Vision through a mindscape where he confronts the Original Vision and a burning predecessor named J.I.M.

That structure gives Bettany several versions of the character to play, and reviewers noticed. Absolute Geeks gave the episode 4 out of 5, arguing that it hands Bettany the spotlight in a layered, multi-role performance, even if the side stories felt rushed and underfed.

Den of Geek’s review was also positive, noting that the episode swerves away from a big superhero fight and leans into thoughtful discussions of identity and family. The critic said that approach feels thematically earned and gives hope that the show can end on a strong note.

The overall reception has been solid. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 91% Tomatometer score from 87 reviews, along with an 84% Popcornmeter score from more than 500 audience ratings.

That puts it ahead of ‘Agatha All Along’, which sits at 84%, though it still trails the 92% score of ‘WandaVision’. Some critics have called the show bloated at times, and one review suggested it should have ended after the sixth episode.

The fan reaction has been more enthusiastic. Fans have praised the cast, with Spader’s Ultron getting special attention, and the premiere debuted with an 88% audience score that placed it above several other superhero releases of the year.

The mixed notes are worth remembering, too. The same critics who admired the performances have said the central mystery hasn’t always been captivating, which makes the strength of this episode more notable.

The numbers arrive at a perfect moment, because ‘Immolation’ ends with a major twist. The mysterious Client is finally unmasked, and he looks exactly like Ultron, revealing himself as the original human source of Ultron’s avatar.

The hour also ends with guards surrounding Vision and Paladin, Jocasta being captured and a rocket hitting Paladin’s van. In the mindscape, Ultron throws F.R.I.D.A.Y. off a balcony.

The Client’s exact identity remains unconfirmed, and the series finale on Nov. 10 will have to answer who he is and what he wants. With the strongest-rated episode of the season now behind it, the finale has a high bar to clear.

If the ratings hold, ‘VisionQuest’ could finish as one of the better-received Marvel streaming series of the year. The final hour will decide whether Vision’s journey sticks the landing.

Does 'Immolation' deserve to be the highest-rated episode of 'VisionQuest' so far?
