Anthony Mackie Just Confirmed Chris Evans Is Not Coming Back as Captain America in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Chris Evans’ return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been one of the most anticipated reveals of the entire ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ rollout, arriving years after Steve Rogers appeared to close the book on his story for good. Since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ saw an aged Steve pass his shield to Sam Wilson before choosing to live out his life with Peggy Carter, fans have wondered exactly what shape his eventual comeback would take.

That question grew louder once Marvel confirmed Evans would appear in the film, especially given how firmly the studio had positioned Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the current Captain America. With both actors now sharing space within the same movie, speculation quickly turned to whether Evans would simply reclaim the Captain America mantle outright.

Mackie has now put that particular theory to rest. Speaking with Variety following Marvel’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con, Mackie clarified that Chris Evans is indeed returning as Steve Rogers, but not as Captain America, and hinted that Steve may instead take on the identity of Nomad within the film.

Mackie leaned into the comic book roots of that idea directly, explaining that in the source material, Steve Rogers becomes Nomad, and challenging anyone questioning the reference to actually read the comics rather than simply calling themselves a fan. He framed the distinction as a matter of being a real fan of the source material rather than just claiming the title casually.

When pressed further on whether that same storyline could actually play out within the film itself, Mackie kept things playful, joking that he had no idea and claiming he does not even watch movies, keeping the door open without confirming any specifics about how the identity shift might unfold on screen.

In Marvel Comics lore, Nomad is the identity Steve Rogers adopts after stepping away from the Captain America mantle following the discovery that the President of the United States was secretly leading the villainous Secret Empire organization. That comic storyline saw Steve reclaim the Captain America identity only months later, following the death of the character who briefly replaced him.

Evans has spoken previously about the conditions under which he agreed to return to the franchise, telling audiences at CinemaCon that he only wanted to come back if there was a genuinely meaningful reason for the character’s reappearance, adding that ‘Doomsday’ provided exactly that kind of justification for bringing Steve Rogers back into the story.

That long-awaited return was officially unveiled through a surprise teaser that ran ahead of screenings of ‘Avatar, Fire and Ash,’ showing Steve riding a motorcycle home before packing away his old Captain America suit and holding a baby, a moment widely interpreted as confirmation of the life he built with Peggy Carter after stepping away from the battlefield. Evans went on to appear in person at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel, marking his first live convention appearance tied to the character since ‘Endgame.’

Evans is also confirmed to return for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027, with production on that film expected to begin later this year, suggesting whatever identity Steve takes on in ‘Doomsday’ will likely carry forward into the franchise’s next major chapter as well.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set for release on December 18, fans will not have to wait much longer to see exactly how Steve Rogers fits back into a world where Sam Wilson has already claimed the Captain America title for himself.
