Anthony Mackie Says “Everyone is Expendable” in Avengers: Doomsday — and Hints at a Big Cliffhanger

Anthony Mackie is currently promoting his new animated movie Sneaks, but fans are just as interested in what’s next for him in the Marvel world. Mackie will return as Sam Wilson, also known as Captain America, in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and he’s already warning fans to expect some surprises — and heartbreak.

In a recent interview Mackie spoke about the Avengers: Doomsday script. His response? It sounds like the movie will end with a serious twist.

“You know what? I was really excited, man,” Mackie said. “It’s one of those stories that really pushes the boundaries, and it — the cliffhanger at the end, you know, the last moments of the film — it really builds and sets us up for a way for the continuation of the Marvel saga, which is really exciting.”

That sounds a lot like what happened with Avengers: Infinity War, which shocked fans by ending with major character losses and a dark cliffhanger.

In Avengers: Doomsday, Mackie’s Captain America will lead a brand-new Avengers team. This is the first major Avengers movie since Endgame, and the team now includes new characters from across the Marvel universe. The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the duo behind Infinity War and Endgame.

Mackie also said this movie will be different from anything Marvel has done before.

“You see these characters, and you see how they’re introduced and how they play in the universe moving forward, and no one is safe. Everyone is expendable.”

That line, “everyone is expendable,” has fans wondering: Will beloved characters die for real this time?

Mackie added, “It’s really exciting,” as he prepares to go back to the UK to keep filming what many expect to be Marvel’s biggest movie yet.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
