Apple TV’s ‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 Scores Big With Critics as Rotten Tomatoes Score is Revealed

Blake Crouch’s multiverse thriller became one of Apple TV’s biggest sci-fi success stories almost as soon as it premiered, turning a single physics professor’s abduction into a sprawling meditation on the road not taken. ‘Dark Matter‘ wrapped up its first season having told a largely complete story straight from Crouch’s bestselling novel, leaving many wondering whether a continuation could even work without source material to draw from.

That uncertainty didn’t stop Apple TV from moving forward anyway, bringing back Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen alongside Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Amanda Brugel for a new 10-episode chapter. With Crouch himself staying hands-on in the writers’ room despite never penning a sequel novel, expectations were cautiously optimistic heading into the new season’s rollout.

Those expectations appear to have largely paid off, at least critically. Season 2 currently holds a 91% Tomatometer score across 22 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an 89% Popcornmeter score from fewer than 50 audience ratings so far, marking a notable improvement over Season 1’s 81% critics score.

That warmer reception has come through clearly in early reviews. FandomWire’s M.N. Miller described the new season as “bigger, bolder, and more emotionally ambitious” than what came before, praising its willingness to expand the story’s scope. Not every outlet has been quite as enthusiastic, though, with several reviewers noting the season juggles a much larger cast of alternate-reality doubles than its predecessor, sometimes to the story’s detriment.

Season 2 opens with a stark visual reminder of where the story left off: more than a dozen bodies laid out in a row, every single one of them a different version of Jason Dessen. That image sets the tone for a season built around juggling far more doppelgangers than the relatively contained two-Jason structure that defined the first outing.

Several critics have pointed to that expanded scope as both the season’s biggest strength and its most significant challenge. With upwards of 100 versions of Jason established by the end of Season 1, keeping track of which iteration is which, and which world any given scene is unfolding in, has become something reviewers describe as genuinely disorienting at times, even as the emotional core of the story remains intact.

Beyond the multiversal chaos, Season 2 also introduces new storylines running in parallel, including Charlie navigating typical teenage milestones and a separate investigation into the mounting pile of dead Jasons scattered across timelines. Some critics have found these secondary threads less compelling than the show’s central multiverse mechanics, arguing the season occasionally loses focus by splitting its attention across three or four storylines at once.

Despite those structural growing pains, the season’s ambition has clearly resonated with a majority of critics covering it. The story continues following Jason as he navigates the fallout from Season 1’s climactic ending, in which Daniela, Charlie and Jason successfully escaped the horde of alternate Jasons trapped inside the Box.

The season’s 10 episodes are rolling out weekly on Apple TV, having premiered on August 28, with new episodes continuing to release every Friday through October 30. That means the next new episode is set to arrive September 11, giving fans still catching up plenty of time to work through the growing tangle of alternate timelines before the story moves forward.

With a strong Tomatometer score backing it up and a devoted fanbase still working through the season’s early episodes, ‘Dark Matter’ appears to have successfully cleared the tricky hurdle of continuing a story that once felt fully resolved. Whether it can stick the landing as more of its parallel plotlines converge remains one of the season’s biggest open questions.
