‘Aquamarine’ is making a comeback, with Disney officially moving forward with a new series adaptation of the beloved 2006 fantasy movie. Disney+ and Disney Channel have ordered a pilot for the project, bringing the story back to screens nearly two decades after the original film first introduced audiences to a magical mermaid adventure.

According to Variety, the new series will feature Emma Roberts, who starred in the original movie as Claire Brown. Roberts will return to the world of ‘Aquamarine’ by guest starring as Claire in the pilot, while also serving as an executive producer on the project.

The upcoming adaptation will come from writer Sarah Watson, who is known for creating the popular series ‘The Bold Type’. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the original ‘Aquamarine’ film, is also returning for the new project as director and executive producer. Susan Cartsonis, who produced the 2006 movie, will also be involved as an executive producer.

The new series will tell a different story while keeping the magical elements that fans remember. The official pilot description reveals that the show will follow a teenager named Coral, who moves to a seaside town and begins searching for answers about her missing mother.

The official logline states: “When teenaged Coral moves to a dreamy seaside town, she begins unraveling the truth behind her mother’s disappearance—and discovers her mother was a mermaid, awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”

The original ‘Aquamarine’ starred Emma Roberts, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, Sara Paxton, Jake McDorman and Arielle Kebbel. The movie followed two best friends, Claire and Hailey, who discover a mermaid named Aquamarine and help her find true love. While the film did not receive much attention from critics when it was first released, it eventually developed a loyal fanbase and became a cult favorite among viewers.

For Roberts, the new series marks a return to a project that helped introduce her to a wider audience. Since appearing in ‘Aquamarine’, she has built a successful career with roles in films such as ‘We’re the Millers’, ‘Palo Alto’ and ‘The Art of Getting By’. She has also become well known for her television work, including several seasons of ‘American Horror Story’ and the series ‘Scream Queens’.

Sarah Watson brings plenty of television experience to the project. Along with creating ‘The Bold Type’, she has worked on Disney+’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ and created the CBS drama ‘Pure Genius’.

The new ‘Aquamarine’ series is part of Disney’s recent push to revisit older movies and turn them into television projects. The company has also been developing series versions of other popular properties, including adaptations of ‘Holes’ and ‘Witch Mountain’.

Details about the full cast, production schedule and possible release date have not yet been announced. However, with original talent returning behind the scenes and Emma Roberts involved, the new ‘Aquamarine’ series is already attracting attention from fans who grew up with the original movie.
