At just 20 years old, filmmaker Kane Parsons is close to making history in Hollywood with his upcoming film “Backrooms.” The information comes from industry box office forecasts and production reports, which track early revenue predictions for major movie releases.

The film, produced by A24, is expected to open in theaters on May 29. Early estimates suggest it could earn between 25 and 33 million dollars in its opening weekend in North America alone. Earlier predictions were slightly lower, around 20 million dollars. Even the lower range would be considered a strong result for a film with a budget of around 10 million dollars.

If “Backrooms” reaches the top of the box office in its opening weekend, Kane Parsons could become one of the youngest filmmakers ever to achieve that milestone. Some reports suggest he could even be the youngest director to have a number one film on debut weekend, depending on final rankings and competition at the time of release.

The Complete Plot of A24’s ‘Backrooms’ Has Apparently Leaked Online — And It’s More Unsettling Than You’d Think

The film is based on Parsons’ viral internet project from YouTube, where he first created the “Backrooms” series under the channel Kane Pixels. The idea comes from the popular creepypasta internet story about an endless, strange, empty space that feels both familiar and disturbing. His short videos gained huge attention online and eventually led to a full Hollywood production.

The movie is directed by Parsons in his feature-length debut and written by Will Soodik. It is produced by major companies including A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps Entertainment. Well-known producers such as James Wan and Shawn Levy are also involved in the project, showing how large the production has become despite its relatively small budget.

The cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. Ejiofor plays Clark, a furniture store owner and failed architect. Reinsve plays Dr. Mary Kline, a therapist searching for her missing patient. The story follows her journey into a strange alternate dimension in search of answers.

Production for the film began in July 2025 in Vancouver, Canada under the working title “Effigy.” Filming ended in August 2025. Reports from production mention that large physical sets were built to represent the “Backrooms” world, covering tens of thousands of square feet. Some descriptions from crew members even suggest the set was so large that people occasionally got lost while filming.

The project also highlights how Parsons moved from online creator to Hollywood director in a very short time. He first started uploading his Backrooms videos in 2022, and within a year the idea was picked up for a full film adaptation. This fast transition is one of the reasons the movie has drawn so much attention from both fans and the film industry.

If the box office predictions are correct, “Backrooms” could become a breakout hit for A24 and a major career milestone for Parsons. Even if it opens at the lower end of forecasts, it would still be considered a strong performance for a debut director working with a modest budget.

As the release date gets closer, attention is building around whether the film can meet expectations and possibly set a new record for a young filmmaker in modern cinema.
