‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Already Breaking Box Office Records Before It Even Hits Theaters

Marvel Studios has spent the last few years trying to recapture the box office dominance it enjoyed before the pandemic reshuffled moviegoing habits entirely. Films like ‘The Marvels’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’ struggled to match the massive numbers the studio once took for granted, leaving fans and analysts alike wondering whether the MCU could ever return to its former scale.

That question is starting to answer itself in a big way. With the Russo Brothers back in the director’s chair and both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans returning for one more ride, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has quickly become the most anticipated Marvel release in years, and the numbers rolling in are backing up that hype in a genuinely unprecedented way.

According to Collider, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is now officially tracking for a $300 million opening weekend, fueled by a pre-sale surge unlike anything the box office has seen before. The film has already grossed $35 million in advance ticket sales, and it’s still months away from its theatrical release, a milestone that no other movie in history has managed to hit this early.

That early surge began building steadily throughout the summer. Advance sales first opened tied to the film’s trailer debut, generating $16.5 million on the very first day of availability across roughly 1,000 domestic theaters showing premium formats exclusively. From there, momentum only continued climbing, eventually surpassing every previous benchmark for how far out a film has ever sold this many tickets.

Part of what makes this rollout so unusual is the timing. Disney opened full advance ticket sales a full four months ahead of release, an unconventional move for a studio release of this scale, and one that appears to be paying off given the intensity of fan demand building around Doctor Doom’s live-action debut.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is projected to bring in somewhere between $260 million and $300 million in its opening frame, according to Global Box Office estimates. For context, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ set the modern benchmark back in 2019 with a $357.1 million domestic debut, a record that was only recently broken this year by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ massive $360 million opening.

The film opens December 18, going head-to-head with Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ on the very same day, a scheduling collision that’s already creating friction over premium screen availability. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ won’t have access to IMAX at all during that window, since ‘Dune: Part Three’ secured exclusive rights to the format for three weeks following its debut.

Even without IMAX in its corner, ‘Doomsday’ has continued to outperform expectations across every other premium format available to it. Some trackers have gone as far as suggesting the film could pull in significantly more than current projections indicate, with early forum estimates from box office analysts speculating an opening weekend as high as $400 million to $450 million domestically, though that remains speculative territory well outside official studio tracking.

Given how badly Marvel Studios needs a definitive win after a stretch of underwhelming box office returns, the sheer scale of this pre-sale surge suggests ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ might finally be the film capable of delivering it. Whether the movie can actually match the enormous expectations building around it remains to be seen once it finally reaches theaters in December.

Can Avengers: Doomsday really open to $300 MILLION domestically?
