‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Crossed Notable Box Office Milestone, and It’s Still Four Months Away
Marvel Studios has spent the past few years navigating a complicated relationship with box office expectations, with some releases soaring and others struggling to recapture the franchise’s former dominance. That uncertainty has made every new data point surrounding the studio’s upcoming slate feel especially significant, particularly for its next mega-scale team-up event.
The anticipation building around this winter’s biggest superhero release has only intensified in recent weeks, fueled by a trailer drop that broke viewership records and a wave of premium ticket sales that arrived well ahead of schedule. Now, fresh numbers suggest that momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already crossed $19 million domestically in advance ticket sales, according to tracking data shared by Global Box Office, a striking milestone considering the film doesn’t hit theaters until December 18, roughly four months away. That total comes from just around 1,000 theaters nationwide, a notably narrow slice of the market compared to the film’s eventual wide release.
The presale surge builds on an already record-setting start. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ generated $16.5 million in advance ticket sales during its first 24 hours of availability, according to Variety, a figure that landed as twice the first-day presales of 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ That comparison carries extra weight given that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ had every format and screen available at launch, while ‘Doomsday’ tickets were restricted specifically to premium formats.
That limitation exists because Marvel’s latest team-up won’t have access to IMAX screens domestically for its opening stretch, since Warner Bros. secured exclusivity for ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which shares the same December 18 release date. In response, Disney launched its own premium format certification program, Infinity Vision, designed to steer fans toward large-format screens the studio has verified meet its technical standards.
Despite losing that IMAX advantage, industry insiders remain confident in the film’s earning potential. A Disney insider told TheWrap that films like ‘Barbie’ and the live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ both crossed the billion-dollar mark without any IMAX support, pointing to Doomsday’s own path toward similar success through formats like Dolby, D-Box, and 4DX.
The film also benefits from one of the most star-studded ensembles Marvel has assembled to date, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise as the villain Doctor Doom, joined by Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, and Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic, among many others. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the same duo behind ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the film carries the weight of following one of the highest-grossing movies ever made, a benchmark that still looms large over the entire post-Endgame era of the MCU.
To build further momentum ahead of Doomsday’s release, Marvel is also bringing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ back to theaters for a special rerelease on September 25, giving fans a nostalgic warm-up before the next chapter arrives. That kind of long-game marketing strategy, paired with these early presale numbers, suggests Marvel is determined to make this release feel like a genuine cultural event rather than just another franchise entry.
With four months still to go before opening weekend, these early figures indicate that whatever conversations have circulated about superhero fatigue, audiences are still eager to show up for this particular team-up.
