‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Poster Detail Has Fans Convinced a Scarlet Witch Return Is Hiding in Plain Sight

Marvel Studios has never been shy about playing the long game with its marketing, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been no exception. The campaign has been unusually focused on one man, Doctor Doom, with the studio rationing details about everything around him.

That secrecy kicked into a higher gear in July. San Diego Comic-Con 2026 kicked off on July 23 and gave attendees a first glimpse at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ through the Marvel Studios exhibit. The studio displayed costumes for three mysterious Latverian Witches in green, yellow and purple, and nobody knows who is wearing them.

Then came October, and with it a new piece of artwork. Marvel Studios unveiled a new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ poster at Comic-Con Málaga on Oct. 3, placing Doctor Doom in front of three masked figures identified in coverage as Latverian witches. Now a fresh observation about that poster is spreading fast across social media.

On Nov. 1, the fan account Marvel Mania posted that the poster “seemingly confirms” Wanda Maximoff is one of the witches. The evidence, according to the post, is the hand of the central figure in red, which the account placed side by side with a classic image of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch conjuring crimson energy. The post had pulled in more than 721,000 views and 17,000 likes at the time of the screenshot.

The theory has a natural starting point. Fans noticed that one of the Latverian Witches is now in red instead of yellow. At the San Diego showing the witches wore green, yellow and purple, but on this poster the witch at the back is now wearing red.

The color swap is why red-robed Wanda talk is everywhere. Fans are speculating the witches could be Clea in purple, Wanda in red and Sylvie in green, matching the colors of their magic. Still, a gesture and a wardrobe change are not an announcement.

Marvel has not backed any of it up. The poster gives the three figures different-coloured robes, but Marvel has not linked any colour to a named character, and online guesses remain unconfirmed. The poster does not name the figures or explain what they do in the story.

There is also a healthy dose of caution in the coverage. ComicBook.com points out that it’s already established ‘Doomsday’ includes witches, so the tagline could have nothing to do with Wanda. In other words, the poster may simply be showing witches because the movie has witches.

Even so, it is easy to see why the idea has legs. Fans haven’t seen Wanda Maximoff alive since ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ in 2022, so many have considered that the character will most likely make a comeback in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ That long absence leaves plenty of room for speculation.

Comic book history adds fuel. The idea that the Latverian Witch is a disguised Wanda is not without precedent in the comics, where Wanda recovers her memory with the help of Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan. If the costume does belong to Wanda, Marvel Studios may be poised to adapt ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade,’ one of the most famous storylines in modern Marvel Comics.

Not every fan is sold on a simple Wanda reveal, either. Based on the magic colors established in ‘Agatha All Along,’ the coven includes an Earth, Protection and Spirit witch, and Wanda’s Scarlet chaos is not represented. The same breakdown adds that this does not necessarily mean Wanda is not one of the Latverian Witches.

The mystery may also be bigger than three. A leaked promo photo showing four color-coded Latverian Witches has sparked fan theories that Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Clea or Sylvie are under the masks. That leaves open the possibility that the poster is only showing part of Doom’s coven.

For now, the only safe conclusion is that Marvel’s artwork is doing exactly what it was designed to do. The new one-sheet is a variation on a previous poster featuring Doctor Doom, but this time he’s flanked by his three masked Latverian Witches. The tagline “12.18.26 IS DOOMSDAY” runs across the bottom beside the Marvel Studios logo.

Whether that red-robed figure is Olsen’s Scarlet Witch or just a clever piece of misdirection, fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is slated to open in cinemas on Dec. 18.
