‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Stars Robert Downey Jr. and Pedro Pascal Trade Places as Doctor Doom and Mr. Fantastic for Halloween
Marvel stars have a long tradition of turning Halloween into a chance to poke fun at their own movies. This year, two of the biggest names in the upcoming Avengers team-up decided to take that tradition one step further. The Robert Downey Jr. and Pedro Pascal Halloween costume swap is already one of the most talked-about celebrity moments of the holiday.
The timing is no accident. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ less than 2 months away, both actors are in the middle of a promotional stretch that has fans scanning every post for clues. A joke about their characters’ rivalry fits that mood perfectly.
Downey shared a short Instagram video in which the pair appear in each other’s roles. He wore the blue ‘Fantastic Four’ suit made famous by Pascal’s Reed Richards in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, complete with the number 4 on the chest and a white utility belt. Pascal returned the favor as Doctor Doom, in a cape and a silver Doom mask, which he pushed up onto his head in some shots.

The video, which Downey captioned as a costume swap, shows Pascal cracking up next to his co-star. In one frame, he covers his face with both hands, and in another, he poses with his arms crossed in front of him, mimicking the villain’s stance. Pascal also wore a gray hoodie bearing the letters MIT, a detail that has set off some playful fan theories about whether it hints at a connection between Doom and Reed.
The joke carries extra weight because of how the two characters are connected. In the comics, Reed Richards and Victor von Doom are men of similar intellect who chose very different paths. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ appears to be leaning into that history, with a trailer showing Reed confronting Doom among the rubble of a ruined city and asking whether he is responsible.
Doom’s reply in the footage is that everyone has lived stolen lives and now must give them back. Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm describes the man she once knew as always the smartest guy in every room, someone who used to be kind until everything he loved was taken from him. Seeing the actors swap places in a lighthearted way softens that dramatic tone.
Downey kept the joke alive throughout the day. He also posted a cartoon-style image of Doom trick-or-treating alongside other characters, in which one of the Fantastic Four hands the villain a disappointing treat. The image was a nod to a classic Halloween special and showed Doom in a green hood standing on a doorstep with a group of tiny witches.
Marvel also joined the celebration in other ways. A 2,000-drone show took place in South Korea, and the studio’s social channels leaned heavily on Doom-themed content. The result was a holiday campaign that blended humor with promotion.
The film opens in theaters on December 18, the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’. Advance ticket sales have reportedly crossed $100 million worldwide, according to tracking, and the movie features an enormous ensemble that includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ian McKellen and many others. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are behind the camera.
Pascal’s Reed has been a central part of the marketing, and his character is set to appear in both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Downey, meanwhile, announced his return as Doom at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024 by saying, ‘New mask, same task.’ That history makes the costume swap feel like a callback to an already iconic reveal.

For fans, the video is a rare glimpse of the two stars together outside their characters’ conflict. Downey and Pascal have mostly been presented as adversaries in trailers and posters, so seeing them laugh in each other’s outfits offers a different kind of preview. It also highlights how much fun the cast appears to be having.
It’s also a reminder of how much of the film’s marketing has been built on character dynamics. A single image of Doom’s mask or Reed’s suit carries a lot of baggage after years of speculation. By poking fun at those images, the actors invite fans to share in the joke.
Reaction online has been enthusiastic, with the video drawing hundreds of thousands of views within hours. Many commenters praised Downey’s accurate recreation of Reed’s costume and Pascal’s committed Doom pose. Others joked that the pair seemed to be having more fun than their characters ever will.
Some fans have also used the post to speculate about the film itself. The MIT hoodie in particular has become a topic of discussion, with viewers wondering whether Reed and Victor’s shared history will be explored. There’s no confirmation either way, so it remains a fun theory for now.
With weeks to go before release, the costume swap is a lighthearted way to keep the movie in the conversation. It also reinforces the sense that the cast is closely tied to the franchise’s playful side. Whether or not the hoodie means anything, the moment already feels like a small piece of Marvel history.
