Marvel has already leaned into that shift with the film’s X-Men-focused teaser, which recreates a beloved moment from Joss Whedon’s ‘Astonishing X-Men’ comics where Wolverine watches Cyclops obliterate a Sentinel and remarks that he remembers exactly why Summers is still in charge.

That buildup now has an official description to match it. Marvel’s first character breakdown for Cyclops in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ identifies him plainly as the leader of the X-Men, gearing up to defend mutantkind from extinction against a multiversal threat, a framing that puts him front and center rather than as an afterthought.

That description lines up closely with decades of comic book history that finally gave Cyclops his due as a character. Storylines like ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ and ‘Death of X’ repeatedly cast him as the mutant leader willing to make the hardest possible choices to keep his people alive, even when those choices put him at odds with heroes like Captain America.

Positioning him as mutantkind’s defender against a multiversal extinction-level threat also fits neatly into what ‘Doomsday’ is shaping up to be. With Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom raising an army of Sentinels in the film’s latest footage, giant mutant hunting robots that have historically been one of Cyclops’ most personal enemies in the comics, the stakes for the X-Men side of this story could not be higher.

James Marsden returns to play Scott Summers, bringing back the character’s signature ruby quartz visor and optic energy blasts that first defined him in the original Fox films.
