‘Avengers, Endgame’ Is Getting an Entirely New Ending Built to Set Up ‘Doomsday’ – Here are the Details

Marvel fans have spent years wondering how the studio would ever justify reopening the story that closed out the Infinity Saga. ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ gave Tony Stark his final send-off, brought Captain America full circle, and wrapped a decade of storytelling into one emotional finale. Reworking that ending seemed like the kind of thing Marvel would never dare attempt, until now.

That is exactly what is happening this fall. Marvel Studios confirmed at CinemaCon that ‘Endgame’ is heading back to theaters under a new title, ‘Avengers, Endgame Encore,’ complete with a custom introduction, previously unreleased footage, and a brand new end tag built specifically to connect the film to December’s ‘Avengers, Doomsday.’

The re-release lands in theaters on September 25, just under three months ahead of Doomsday’s own December 18 premiere.

According to reports circulating around the announcement, the added material could run as long as seven minutes, making this far more than a simple theatrical rerun. That additional footage is reportedly built entirely around the Doomsday storyline, meaning audiences revisiting ‘Endgame’ this fall will actually be watching new scenes designed to bridge directly into the next Avengers chapter rather than just an extended cut of the original film.

Doomsday co-director Joe Russo has been candid about just how significant this rerelease is meant to be. Speaking with Deadline at the Sands Film Festival in Scotland, Russo said it’s critically important to re-release the movie, framing the added footage as a way to link the two films together in a way Marvel has never attempted before. He went on to describe the new material as a critical companion story and called it a setup for what audiences will see when Doomsday finally arrives.

Part of what makes this rerelease so significant is timing. Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the MCU in Doomsday, this time stepping into the role of Victor Von Doom rather than Tony Stark, while Chris Evans is also expected back as Steve Rogers.

Given that Endgame closed out both of those characters’ arcs in dramatically different ways, new footage tying their stories forward into Doomsday gives Marvel a rare chance to reshape how audiences understand where those characters have been since the original film’s release.

The rerelease will also debut in a new premium format called Infinity Vision, a certification Disney developed to guarantee top-tier picture and sound quality across participating theaters. That push mirrors a similar strategy Sony used with its expanded rerelease of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which returned to theaters with bonus scenes months after its initial run to build fresh momentum ahead of later releases.

For a franchise that has occasionally been criticized for demanding too much homework from casual viewers, turning a seven-year-old blockbuster into required viewing ahead of its next major crossover is a bold move. Still, given that ‘Endgame’ remains one of the highest-grossing films ever made, Marvel clearly believes there is an audience eager to revisit it, especially with new material dangled as an incentive.

Whether the new footage ends up featuring Doctor Doom directly, expanding on the multiverse groundwork Endgame originally laid with Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One, or taking a different route entirely remains to be seen. What is clear is that Marvel is treating this rerelease as far more than nostalgia, positioning it as an essential piece of the road leading into Doomsday.
