‘Black Panther’ Star Letitia Wright Opens up About What Makes Her ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Return Feel Different
The road back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been a short one for Letitia Wright, and it’s clear from her recent comments that stepping back into the fold means something different this time around. After carrying the weight of an entire franchise on her shoulders in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ Wright is now heading into one of the most ambitious ensemble films Marvel has ever attempted.
That film is ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and it reunites Wright with a cast so massive it spans three separate cinematic eras of Marvel storytelling. Between the Avengers, the Thunderbolts turned New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, the movie is shaping up to be a true crossover event in every sense of the word.
In an interview with Flip Your Wig, Wright reflected on what it felt like returning to a franchise she has now been part of in some form since 2018. She described the production as an ensemble of greatness and said she was genuinely excited just to be included, noting that her involvement in past Avengers films had been comparatively small.
This time, according to Wright, that’s changed. She explained that she now has, in her words, a little bit more to do than in her previous appearances, a comment that lines up with her expanded role as the MCU’s new Black Panther following Chadwick Boseman’s death and the character shift that closed out ‘Wakanda Forever.’
Wright wasn’t willing to give away plot details, and when pressed on one of the most persistent fan theories surrounding the film, whether T’Challa Jr. might appear as a second Black Panther, she stayed cryptic. She said she’d sworn to secrecy but confirmed she had just wrapped filming for the day and was having a great time on set.
That kind of tight-lipped enthusiasm has become something of a pattern for Wright throughout the film’s production cycle. In a separate comment reflecting on her time on ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ Wright even appeared to briefly mix it up with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ the sequel currently in the pipeline, joking about how easily the two productions blur together given how much time she’s spent filming both.
Despite the secrecy, Wright has offered small glimpses into her preparation process. She previously shared a photo referencing the 2010 comic storyline ‘Doomwar,’ a story in which Shuri, as Black Panther, faces off against a version of Doctor Doom after he leads an invasion of Wakanda. Whether the film draws directly from that arc remains unconfirmed, but the reference alone was enough to send fans into speculation mode.
Wright’s relationship with the Black Panther mantle has evolved considerably since she first stepped into the MCU. She has spoken about not initially being a comic book reader before landing the role of Shuri, yet she has since described carrying the Black Panther legacy as an honor, and has expressed excitement about audiences getting to see Shuri continue to grow across future films.
That growth is central to why ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ feels like such a pivotal moment for her character. After debuting in a small but pivotal role in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and appearing briefly in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Wright’s Shuri has gone from supporting player to a central figure carrying real narrative weight into Marvel’s next major crossover.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ boasts a sprawling cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, alongside stars like Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, and returning X-Men veterans Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. With that scale of talent surrounding her, it’s easy to see why Wright keeps returning to the word ensemble when describing the experience.
