‘Blade Runner 2099’ First Look Reveals Michelle Yeoh in a World Ruled by Replicants

The photos depict Yeoh’s character wielding a weapon amid a hazy, fire-lit cityscape, reflecting a world reshaped by a replicant uprising that took place sometime between the events of ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and the new series.

According to the show’s official synopsis, that uprising has left replicants as the city’s ruling class while humans have been reduced to second-class citizens, forced to survive on the margins of a society they no longer control. Yeoh plays Olwen, an aging replicant Blade Runner confronting the final days of her predetermined lifespan, while Schafer’s Cora is a human fugitive who’s spent her entire life adopting false identities to stay hidden.

Schafer described the central relationship between Olwen and Cora as the emotional core of the entire series, framing their partnership as one built despite existing on completely opposite sides of the city’s new social order. She explained that Cora, as a human hiding within a replicant-ruled state, has spent years struggling just to survive while keeping her brother afloat, describing her character as someone who’s essentially been flying under the radar her entire life, sentiments she shared in comments reported by Entertainment Weekly.

That reversal of the franchise’s traditional human-replicant power dynamic gives the series a genuinely fresh angle within Scott’s established universe. Rather than simply retreading the original films’ central conflict between humans hunting rogue replicants, ‘Blade Runner 2099’ flips that premise entirely, forcing its two leads to navigate a world where survival depends on which side of that divide you happen to be born into.

Showrunner Silka Luisa has described the series as depicting the direct aftermath of that war, explaining that the decades between ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and 2099 saw that uprising fully play out, fundamentally reshaping the balance of power throughout Los Angeles. The series does not feature characters from the previous films, instead building an entirely new story within the same established world.

The supporting cast includes Dimitri Abold, known for ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,’ and Lewis Gribben from ‘Somewhere Boy,’ alongside additional cast members Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, and Tom Burke. Ridley Scott serves as an executive producer on the series, alongside Michael Green and Silka Luisa, giving the show direct creative continuity back to the franchise’s original filmmaker.

Production on the series has taken place across locations in Prague and Belfast, with filming wrapping earlier this year after facing delays tied to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. ‘Blade Runner 2099’ is currently set to premiere on Prime Video on November 25, giving fans a firm date after years of anticipation surrounding the project.
