Fans hoping to see Remy and Linguini return for Ratatouille 2 may have to wait forever, as director Brad Bird has shared disappointing news about a possible sequel. The Pixar filmmaker revealed that he has no plans to continue the beloved 2007 animated movie because he believes the original story already reached its perfect ending.

During a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub while promoting his upcoming movie Ray Gunn, Bird was asked about Pixar’s recent focus on sequels and whether Ratatouille could become the next classic film to receive a follow-up. While many Pixar movies have expanded with new chapters, Bird said he does not feel the same way about Remy’s journey.

Ratatouille remains one of Pixar’s most loved films, telling the story of Remy, a talented rat who dreams of becoming a chef in Paris. The movie follows his unlikely friendship with Linguini, a young kitchen worker who helps Remy secretly create amazing dishes at a famous restaurant. The film was a major success, earning five Oscar nominations and winning Best Animated Feature.

Bird explained that Pixar has approached him about the idea of returning to the world of Ratatouille, but he has always felt that the story was complete.

“No. I don’t. They’ve made little feints towards that to see how I would react. They’ll, like, crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like, ‘Would you?’ And I’m like, ‘No, we told that story,’” Bird told Collider.

The director also said that the success of a movie often leads fans to immediately ask for another chapter, but he does not believe every story needs a sequel.

“Any time you do something that ends up connecting with people, they automatically think, ‘How about another?’” Bird explained.

He also compared Ratatouille to another one of his famous movies, The Iron Giant. Although the animated film became a cult favorite years after its release, Bird does not see a reason to continue that story either.

“What would you do to follow that up? He’s lumbering around, still undiscovered? In other words, to me, that story is told,” he said.

While Ratatouille 2 appears unlikely, Bird does have more interest in continuing the world of The Incredibles. The filmmaker said he could imagine another adventure with the Parr family, who already returned for The Incredibles 2 in 2018.

“Now, The Incredibles — I could see another Incredibles film,” Bird said.

Although he will not direct the upcoming third movie in the franchise, Bird is still involved with the project by writing the script for director Peter Sohn.

For now, Bird is focused on his new animated project Ray Gunn, a long-awaited neo-noir film that is expected to arrive on Netflix. Meanwhile, Ratatouille fans can still revisit Remy’s original adventure, which remains available to stream on Disney+.

While many viewers would love another trip to Paris with the little chef, Brad Bird appears confident that Remy’s story has already been told in the best way possible.
