Brandon Sanderson Just Finished the ‘Mistborn’ Screenplay, and Fans Have Been Watching Every Percentage Point
Fantasy adaptations have a long, complicated history of losing what made the source material special somewhere between the page and the screen. For years, fans of one particular beloved saga worried the same fate might befall their favorite story, especially after over a decade of stalled attempts to bring it to life.
That worry has steadily faded thanks to an unusually transparent process, one where the author himself has been writing the script and publicly tracking every step along the way. Now, that very public countdown has finally reached its finish line.
According to Brandon Sanderson’s own official website, the screenplay for the long-awaited ‘Mistborn‘ film adaptation has officially reached 100% completion, marking the end of a process fans have been tracking in real time for months. The milestone comes as part of Sanderson’s sweeping January 2026 deal with Apple TV, which covers film rights to ‘Mistborn’ and television rights to ‘The Stormlight Archive’.
That deal gave Sanderson an unusually high level of creative control over the adaptation, serving as writer, producer, and consultant with final approval on casting, a level of involvement rarely afforded to authors in Hollywood, even compared to names like J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin. Sanderson chose to write the Mistborn screenplay himself, treating it as his full-time job for roughly five months.
His progress became something of a running spectacle for fans, with weekly percentage updates shared through his YouTube channel tracking the script’s climb from just 2% in February all the way through 50% by April, 72% in May, and 91% by mid-July. Sanderson had originally set a personal goal of turning in the finished screenplay by the end of July, a timeline he’s now officially hit.
Throughout the process, Sanderson was candid about just how much revision work went into getting the script right, revealing that certain sections had already gone through as many as twelve separate passes before he considered them finished. He’s described the approach as following what he calls the “James Gunn model,” aiming for a tightly polished script capable of avoiding costly reshoots during production.
Despite hitting this major milestone, Sanderson has been careful to temper expectations about how quickly audiences might actually see the film. Even with the screenplay complete, the project still needs formal approval from Apple, along with a director, a full cast, and a complete production schedule before filming can even begin.
Sanderson has already confirmed that a 2027 theatrical release is unlikely given how much work remains ahead. The film will adapt ‘The Final Empire’, the first novel in the original Mistborn trilogy, with Sanderson previously indicating he envisions a larger hybrid approach that could eventually include a companion television season covering material between the first two books.
With the screenplay now finished, Sanderson has said his attention will shift toward ‘The Stormlight Archive’ television pilot, where he’s set to serve as co-showrunner. That means Mistborn fans may need to stay patient a while longer, even as the project takes its most significant step forward yet.
For a franchise that spent well over a decade stuck in development limbo, simply reaching a completed script represents genuine, tangible progress that fans have been anxiously waiting to see.
