Few casting sagas in modern Hollywood have consumed as much collective attention as the search for a new James Bond. Since Daniel Craig delivered his graceful exit in ‘No Time to Die’ back in 2021, the internet has rarely gone more than a few weeks without a new frontrunner emerging, stoking fresh debate about who deserves the tuxedo next. The franchise’s move to Amazon MGM Studios, paired with the announcement of director Denis Villeneuve at the helm, has only amplified the speculation to near-deafening levels.

Villeneuve is said to be preparing his first Bond movie for Amazon, with production widely expected to begin in 2027. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been confirmed to be writing the screenplay, adding serious creative firepower to what promises to be a fresh reimagining of the legendary spy franchise. With that much prestige already attached, the question of who fills the lead role has become one of the most hotly debated topics in the industry.

British actor Callum Turner emerged as the frontrunner in earnest after reports surfaced that he had been telling friends and associates that he had already secured the coveted 007 role.

One anonymous source described it to the Daily Mail as “the worst-kept secret going,” with his inner circle apparently buzzing with the news. The buzz was strong enough that William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps noted the bookmakers had to dramatically shorten Turner’s odds, moving him from 10/11 to 1/2 in a matter of days.

Yet Turner himself has consistently pushed back on the frenzy, and his most candid comments yet came in a new cover story published today in The Hollywood Reporter, in which the newly married actor addressed the relentless speculation surrounding the 007 casting race.

Turner did not mince words about the absurdity of the situation, saying that even people he has not spoken to in a decade have been reaching out to ask: “I’ll tell you what’s so funny about the Bond thing. Even your best friends ask you, people text you that you haven’t spoken to for 10 years, and you know nothing. It’s such a weird thing of something happening and nothing happening at all. I genuinely know nothing. I just find it quite amusing.”

It is a notably looser admission than the stone-faced deflection he offered earlier this year. At the Berlin International Film Festival in February, where he was promoting his film ‘Rosebush Pruning’, Turner shut down reporters in just a few words, saying “You’re right, it’s very early for that question. I’m not going to comment on it,” before co-star Tracy Letts swooped in to defuse the tension by declaring himself the next 007 to the room’s laughter.

Turner’s steady rise has made him a credible name for the role, with credits including ‘Masters of the Air’, a BAFTA nomination for ‘The Capture’, and a lead role in Apple TV’s upcoming adaptation of William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’, where he stars alongside Mark Strong and Peter Sarsgaard. A Polymarket poll put him at 28% in the running, well ahead of other rumored contenders, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill sitting at 4% and 3.7% respectively.

The studio is expected to make a final decision sometime this year, ahead of a production start in 2027 and a rumored theatrical release window in 2028. For now, the man at the center of it all says he is just as in the dark as the rest of us. Whether that is diplomatic posturing or genuine bewilderment, Turner’s amused shrug might be the most Bond-like thing about him so far. Is he your pick to carry the franchise into its next era, or does someone else deserve a shot at the role?
